Oh god RUKIA ILU FOREVER <3 <3 <3 even though I lasted maybe eight chapters after the Soul Society arc, which I felt was a massive bait-and-switch because damnit, I wanted my monster-of-the-week story.
RUKIA IS/WAS AWESOME. AND I LOVED MY MONSTER OF THE WEEK. I wish the Bleach cast could shrink back down to that original group of Karakura kids and maybe some of the Soul Society peeps hanging around - the thought of Ichigo kind of constantly insulting Byakuya would be AWESOME. I just... couldn't make myself care about the villains, man, and that was all Kubo wanted to talk about for a while there. Or maybe he still is. IDK.
Me and juxtaposie were just discussing rewatching up through the Rescue/Soul Society fight, because there are just that many fantastic moments in that initial story arc (remember Chad and Rukia fighting the monsters Chad couldn't see yet?) but a lot of the time it's hard for me to work up enthusiasm for the rest of it. The only times it's gotten an injection of life is when the vaizards show up, and that's been pretty rare lately. Sigh.
It was a long time ago where I gave up on bleach... I don't remember what the title of the arc was, but it was in the episodes 40s or 50s x.o. I remember Ichigo needed to save Rukia from this cross thing, and there was a fight between him and Byakuya. I really enjoyed her though, it was funny for a while. We use to watch the fansubs in the back of the classroom LOL... Until Bleach got weird and overcrowded.
I went a little longer past that, because the very beginning of the next arc had some great characterization moments, and I felt pretty welcoming of all the characters that had been introduced, but then it devolved into villain backstory which was/is SO BORING. JUST KICK THEIR ASSES ALREADY GUYS. GOD.
I had the same reaction you did. I loved Rukia up until the first time she was imprisoned and I pretty much just gave up on all of Bleach (even though I read it at hte library when bored)
I made up until almost the 300s, chapter-wise. Right after the Pendulum flashback arc is when I finally gave in, because Pendulum was so awesome I wish they could make it a spinoff series.
I had a manga phase last summer/fall, and I started out loving Bleach so hard - but then the gigantic Soul Society arc happened, and the way overcrowding, and the rest...and I couldn't take it anymore. :'(
I loved the Soul Society arc initially, sfm. I didn't realize that EVERY arc was going to be that way, with more and more characters and villain backstory AND SERIOUSLY CAN I JUST SAY HOW ANNOYING THE ESPADA BACKSTORY IS I don't think I've been clear enough yet.
There was a really REALLY fantastic miniarc with Urahara's backstory though, and it's probably my favorite ten chapters or that Bleach has ever produced. I do still love the early stuff with Ichigo and Rukia though. They were awesome together.
