I was a bit confused, but I quickly picked up on what was going on. ;-D A lovely, if sad, little story. I love outsider views on the Sanctuary and its strangeness. Very beautifully done.
Thank you! I love twisting them around and looking at them from the outside, seeing what they look like from an entirely different angle. John Druitt -- likeable neighbor?
At first I thought the James stuff was a comparison, like "And then his FRIEND moved in..." ;-D But this was just as good.
I still want to know what the people who own the buildings across from Helen's Sanctuary think.
"Anything happen while I was on vacation, Ted?" "One of the towers exploded, and the glass in all the windows on the east side shattered." "Aw, man, I miss everything."
He's so bad at actually being alone. He's terrible at actually not knowing anyone or having any human contact. This is his apartment in Tokyo, which has appeared in a couple of other stories. But he's just not tempermentally suited to being a lone wolf.

I enjoyed this. It's nicely bittersweet, melancholy yet with some hope in there.
