Ah, I was so hoping there would be fic on my birthday. Wonderful! I love this so much.

“It would have been kinder to her if I had died. She would mourn me, and eventually go on. You know Elizabeth. If she didn’t have promises binding her, she’d find someone else to love. If she didn’t have me sitting like a dog in a manger, holding on to something I can’t have anyway.” Will closed his eyes. “And now I’ve left my son the same life I promised I never would.”

Poor Will. He does know Elizabeth, and he loves her all the same. I can't wait to read the next part- the W/E reunion, I'm guessing, which I'm sure will be heartwrenching and fabulous.

He knows her. And yes, he understands her. He would forgive her for sleeping with Jack -- of course, so far it's all sleeping, not sex! But yes, next scene the three of them.

Oh, that was gorgeous; I loved the sequence of young Will and his mother, and older Will's memories. So sad. And I love Will trying to be all noble and do the right thing, and Calypso showing him around the curse. Beautiful work as usual!

Thank you! I can really see Will having that kind of childhood, and not wanting it for his son. He wants Elizabeth to be happy. He's just not sure how to get there.

So many people try to write Captain Will as a saint, and he's not. I think he'd miss things, have regrets, and feel a little bitterness once in a while at his situation. Whether you meant to or not, that's what I took from this, and I'm glad you wrote it that way.

I think Will has a lot of regrets. I mean, this is much better than just being dead, but it's still not a bowl of cherries! If there were a way out of it without making things worse, he'd take it. And such a way is about to present itself....

Well, I'll be glad to see it. As for me ... I'd like to see some selfish Will for a change. I don't for a minute imagine he wouldn't have uncharitable thoughts about Jack screwing his wife, no matter how happy he'd want her to be - he's not dead and unfeeling, and she's not a widow. That's just human, and IMO to say Will is "above" that removes the responsibility for caring as much about what happens to him as what happens to Elizabeth or Jack, or James, or the other great characters.

Just your friendly neighborhood Willophile commenting! :-D

I think this is one of the reasons that this is moving toward a healthy dose of Jack/Will. Calypso is talking out of both sides of her mouth when she says "Then you’d better be careful, letting Jack Sparrow so near your heart." She's not entirely talking about Elizabeth.

And something did happen between them when Jack was on the Dutchman. It's just that the reader's not supposed to be sure of that at this point, because when Jack told Elizabeth she didn't believe him and thought it was a joke. But Will was incredibly lonely after eight months alone, and gladder to see Jack than he wanted to admit, and bothered more than he'll say about the shape Jack was in. We'll get that story in flashback soon.

So yes, I think Will is jealous, but he doesn't think he can fairly call Elizabeth on sleeping with Jack when he did, and he thinks it would be selfish to hold on to her. But....

This works better as a threesome, I think, and that's where I'm going.
