Kaylee'd been a bit happier since her conversation with Max, after which she'd decided to try not to be so down. So far, it was working. She was determined to get out and about, make some new friends, make her life here just a little bit more shiny, to the point where she could stand not thinking about Serenity so much.

She'd had to change a lightbulb in her room yesterday. That had been fun, especially the finding a new one part. There'd been a whole closet full of replacement gadgets and doodads! For Kaylee, that was the epitome of exciting.

She was carrying a box of them back to her room when she spotted the newcomer. At least, he looked like a newcomer - he seemed pretty lost. "Hi," she said as she neared him. "You new here?"

Raito hadn't been expecting the voice. Surprised, he spun, quickly, his bag spinning with him. Raito was quick to push an arm down over it to calm it, and then slowly, casually zip the bag closed.

He gave the girl a cool stare, looking her up and down. She didn't seem to be threatening -- but that meant nothing. If this really was some trick L was playing on him, he couldn't dare trust anyone he came across.

He couldn't dare trust anyone, regardless.

The English came as a shock. Well. He hadn't been expecting that, either.

New here? Raito frowned, casting his gaze around once more.

"I woke up just now," he said, slowly. "Where is this?"

"Um..." Kaylee hesitated. No matter how she tried not to judge people on first meeting them, that stare worried her some. "Thing is...I don't know. I woke up a while back just like you, no clue how I got here. Nobody else here seems to know, either." She clutched her box nervously, watching him.

He didn't seem like he'd take that answer too well. Come to think on it, nobody would, but still.

"I'm Kaylee," she added. "What's your name?" He had an accent, too. "Ni hui shuo han yu ma*?" she tried, tentatively.

*Do you speak Chinese?

She didn't know. Great. The way this girl was talking, it sounded like there were a lot of people here -- a lot of people who knew nothing more than she or he did.

And then... was that Chinese she was speaking? Looking surprised, Raito realized she expected him to answer. Sure, he knew a few words in Chinese, but for the most part?

He shook his head. "I'm Yagami Raito," he said, smiling a little. "Nihonjin desu*."

((*I'm Japanese.))
