The first thing Raito noticed when he woke up was the absence of the familiar, cool metal weight around his wrist.
He was laying on the floor, fully dressed, his schoolbag slug around his shoulder and lying next to him. It was entirely too bright to be the bedroom he'd fallen asleep in -- there were no windows in there -- and Raito slowly opened his eyes, trying to figure out what was going on.
He was laying in the middle of what looked like... an airport terminal. There were rows and rows of empty, uncomfortable-looking chairs, wide, full windows, and a quiet, eerie sort of emptiness all around him.
He shifted, sat up, and a hand instantly went to curl fingers around his wrist.
Free.
For a wild moment, Raito was sure he'd gotten away. He didn't know how and he didn't know why, but the cuff was gone, and L was gone, and--
But wait.
Raito glared towards the ground, the smile fading quickly off his face. How could he have gotten to an empty airport terminal? This couldn't be real, it had to be some kind of dream, or maybe... maybe L was...
Raito's eyes darted around, looking for some kind of camera. He stood, slowly, stretching, a hand dropping to the bag on his side. Glancing down to it, he blinked. He didn't remember having this with him. He'd left his school things at home.
Peeking inside, he thought, for a moment, that his heart had stopped.
The Death Note was inside.
He didn't dare pull it out. Instead, his gaze shifted up, scanning the seats around him, the windows, the monitors, everything.
Something fishy was going on, and Raito did not find this joke funny in any way.
Instead, he reached for his cell phone. Pulling it out, he flipped it open, quickly dialing Misa's phone number. He didn't know who else to call.
But he got nothing but a busy signal.
"Damnit, Misa," he growled, closing the phone and slipping it back into his bag. Misa was the only person he had on the inside, the only person he could talk to to get some answers from.
Unfortunately, it looked like he was stuck inside L's game for now, and he would have to find a way out on his own.
