I’ve yet to see the Chinese film (although a friend shares your glowing opinion); what somewhat bitterly amuses me is the notion I’ve seen that a Chinese-made, Chinese-targeted film rooted in cultivation mythology (and Omyoudo is a Japanese outgrowth of Feng Shui to begin with) can rip off Dr. Strange.
LOL! The Marvel Cinematic Universe was a big event for fans and movie-goers for nearly a decade. I'm not surprised by its influence.
Although this film's director has had plagiarism incidents in the past and this was why the government decided to step in and "punish" him by removing Yin-Yang Master from Chinese theatres.
My point, if I failed to convey it, was that the magic in Dr. Strange is so heavily rooted in Eastern mysticism to begin with that any Asian use of similar tropes and stage business is a matter of influence coming full circle.
Which, of course, is not necessarily how the various corporate suits and government censors are likely to construe matters.
You give too much credit to the average viewer. All they see is the same spinning circles in Dr. Strange are also in Onmyouji.
Only obsessed readers or fanfic writers dig that deep into the associated history/background.
As for the government in China, they know the problems there but they have a habit of acting when the complaints become loud on Chinese internet platforms.
