I have finished less than half of my costume, but I did sew a zipper without a zipper foot. Bit of a trial, it doesn't look that great though. Also due to the zipper being HUGE the underskirt is longer than the overskirt. I'm wondering if I should (/will have time to) do anything

Shorten the zipper?
Just cut the end off it, double it back and sew the end back onto itself.

...or you could buy a bra-extender from prettty much any shop and a pack of bra-hooks from spotlight for a couple of dollars.
