Yeah, he certainly wasn't a pushover in old age! I haven't looked yet, does the article describe what he did in his early life?

I'm pretty sure the article doesn't say. From what I remember, it was mostly religious learning or general knightishness or something. After all, he had to practice for a bit before he could go pwn everyone ever in the face for 40 years.
