Fuck me sideways. Just checked my mail, and there's a jury summons in it (well, the "2-week call-in term" thing, but it's still a chance). Now, that in and of itself doesn't bother me, but the fucking courthouse is in Tacoma. For those of you elsewhere, that's 130 miles north of me, just outside the capital ( Read more... )

fuck the government, frustration

Uhhhh that sounds a little insane to me. How can they expect you to serve jury duty in Tacoma if you live 130 miles south of Tacoma? Can't you get dismissed from jury duty if you do have financial hardship? I mean, if your wife has a job that she NEEDS the car for and you cannot afford a rental/hotel expenses, can they really expect you to fulfill jury duty? I would think in your circumstances, they should excuse you.

And if not, they're completely fucked up.

Well, that's what I'm hoping to get them to agree to. If not...well, I dunno what I'll do.

they won't demand that you foot the bill for coming up to do jury duty. Not when you live like 4 counties away. I am sure this is just an error.

I got one and they put me at a courthouse that was no where near me. I told them, I don't have a job and don't have a car. They told me not to even bother.

That's pretty much my situation. Here's hoping it works for me.

They kept trying to summon me when I was not even in the country. When I finally was and they summoned me again (they did it three times in a row, they must have really wanted my opinion) my husband told them I have social anxiety. The lady said to just write a letter explaining that, send it in, and I would be excused.

I hope it works out for you.

Get it deferred and then, if you can swing it, get a letter together or a phone call and lay it all out how travel's beyond reasonable for you. Good luck!

it sounds like they have you registered in the wrong county. NO WAY you should be getting a summons to a jury in Pierce County. I am betting this is an error. You are registered to vote and stuff in Vancouver, yes?

(side note, for those not from around these parts, Tacoma is like South Seattle really. It is half way between Olympia and Seattle.)

Apparently, Tacoma is the fed court house for 19 counties, and my county is one of them. Washington only has 2 fed court districts, one with a courthouse in Tacoma, the other in Seattle (north half of state and south half of state, I guess).

oh, that makes sense, I guess. Still, you should be able to get out of it.
