Vengeance is an impracticable mission.

Of all the motivations that I have seen drive human behavior, I now know it to be the most futile, and the most self-destructive.

It's alright, Ark.

...

...what is it?

Do you believe that mankind was created by God?

...of course I do. What else would I believe?

Some people believe differently.

Do you believe that the things mankind creates are, then, created by the will of God?

Vengeance is a necessary evil sometimes, though, if you kennit?

Retribution, perhaps, is necessary.

Vengeance, as fueled by emotion, will accomplish no goal. It is unattainable.

Vengeance is a goal of itself.

Trust me, I've had some experience in the matter. I swear blind Ro' went mad for lack of vengeance, and mayhap if he'd had the chance to make O'Dim pay for what he did, he might have been the better for it.

And I know damn well that vengeance on Ro' made me feel a damn sight better, say true and say thankya.

Can you explain why?

Forgiveness is a tricky one, I'm afraid.

[Insert delay as she follows what he's talking about in order to realize he read her entry.]

You find forgiveness to be tricky, Joshua? Have you forgiven in the past?

Oh, on occasion. But I meant more that it's a tricky subject in general than that I had any unusual difficulty with it myself. What it really means, what it's really for, when it's truly necessary -- it's one of those concepts that only sounds simple on paper, isn't it?

It only sounds simple if one does not attempt to define it.

What do you think it means?
