Moon Rise

It was that really oppressive kind of hot that made a person sweat when they weren’t even moving. The air was thick and a heavy cloud of smog hung over Gotham city. It made Kon feel dirty, as if the dirt and pollution in the air had infiltrated his force field and was clinging thickly to his skin. Kon hardly felt a breeze no matter how fast he fly though the city.

He found Tim in pretty short order.

Tim was sorting out a couple of gang bangers that looked like they were bothering a pretty young girl in a flower print dress. She was backed up against the side wall in the alley where Tim had decided throw down. Her eyes were wide and scared and she followed Tim’s movements with a quiet desperation.

Kon set down next to her and when she glanced over at him with panic in her eyes, Kon smiled at her reassuringly.

“Want me to drop you off at the mouth of the alley?” he asked in his most pleasant farm boy voice. The sooner she got out of here the sooner Tim would be free.

She nodded at him mutely and only gasped a little when he grabbed her by her shoulders and flew her over the mostly unconscious group of gang bangers. He set her down as gently as he could, but she still stumbled a bit.

“You need me to take you home or anything, or will you be alright?” Kon asked, hoping she’d say no.

She didn’t say anything, however, just nodded at him and took off down the street. Kon watched her go, surprised she could move so fast in the heeled sandals she was wearing.

Kon heard Tim come up behind him.

“Cops are on the way, meet me at the usual spot,” he said and took off.

Kon didn’t know how Tim beat always beat him to their spot, but he did.

He was sitting quietly on the ledge with his legs dangling. He was eating a sandwich and watching the moon rise slowly in the east.

It was huge and dark red. The clouds gathered airily like smoke all around it. It looked eerily beautiful.

Kon sat down next to Tim.

“Moon looks so different here. ‘Sbright white in Smallville,” Kon said, his voice was low and sounded almost reverent. The city was mostly quiet, the sound damped by the heavy air and the people subdued from the heat.

“It’s the pollution,” Tim said dismissively, but Kon could tell that Tim’s photographer’s eyes were taking in everything. His hand was making a small twitching movement that Kon knew meant he wished he had his camera around his neck.

Kon smiled. Tim pretended a lot that he was pure cynicism, but Kon never bought it. How could someone who could take pictures like Tim ever have a dark heart. Tim found the beauty in almost everything. He could make a condemned building take your breath away.

Kon wasn’t sure how anyone could ever think Tim was cold.

So Kon sat back and watched the moon rise with Tim, glad for the silence and the companionship.

Though he silently mused that he probably wouldn’t have minded the quiet ‘click click click’ of the shutter of Tim’s favorite camera.
