The first time was definitely payback. Jun should have known better than to think Nino would take a prank sitting down. Especially when that prank involved waking him up at the crack of dawn after a particularly exhausting week.

But Jun didn’t know better and he certainly didn’t notice the gears turning in Nino’s head as he continued on his quest to wake the other three members of Arashi. So Jun absolutely didn’t expect it when Nino sauntered into his hotel room with a semi-drunk (and semi-naked) Sho.

“What the-,” Jun managed before being cut off.

“Ne, Sho-kun, Matsumoto-kun owes me a meal from last week. Let’s have him treat us to Yakiniku!” Nino said cheerfully. Sho grinned goofily at Jun and motioned for him to join them.

“Yakiniku!! Yay!!”

The next place Jun found himself was in a restaurant’s kitchen washing dishes after discovering all the money was missing from his wallet.

Jun was annoyed with himself. His first free day in two months and here he was sitting in a café with his idiotic bandmates. It’s not as if he didn’t enjoy their company, because if he didn’t, Arashi would have disbanded after their first year. But Jun could think of other things to do, such as shopping or relaxing in a spa, than listen to them drone on about fish.

“So what should we do next?”

“Oh! Oh! Let’s go to the beach!”

“Let’s charter a boat.”

“So we can go fishing? No way Oh-chan.”

“I’d like some bass.”

“I’m allergic to bass.”

“Then flounder.”

“I hate flounder.”

Jun closed his eyes and reminded himself that all five members of Arashi were vital to its success.

“How about some salmon then?”

“Salmon? Well-”

“SHUT UP! WHO CARES ABOUT THE DAMN FISH?!” Jun yelled, banging his hand down on the table, sending coffee flying. Three pairs of eyes glanced at his in fear while one pair merely rolled.

“You owe me a coffee.”

He just didn’t understand it. How in the world could he have let this happen? The crush on Sho was explainable, after all, he was only fourteen and it was really only admiration that he had for him.

This was different. Nino is different. When exactly did that little twerp change from being annoying to being lovable? Jun sighed and doused his face with cold water.

“Wake up Jun. Wake up.”

“Why are you talking to yourself?” Jun turned around and found Nino staring at him with a raised eyebrow.

“Why didn’t you knock!? This is a private bathroom!”

“Don’t get your underwear in a bunch and since when is Aiba-chan’s bathroom your private bathroom?”

“I-I-”

“Whatever, pizza’s here. I paid with your money.”

Matsumoto Jun glanced around the restaurant nervously and adjusted his wig. This was the first and last time he’d ever let himself take fashion advice from Riida. The man didn’t even buy his own clothes, why did Jun think he’d be able to help him?

Swallowing the remaining wine in one gulp, Jun knew exactly why he was desperate enough to ask Ohno. How could he not when the reason for it had just stepped foot into the restaurant.

Jun pulled the collar of the trench coat impossibly higher as he watched Nino and the pretty young girl take a seat at the reserved table. He watched jealously as the two of them shared a menu and ordered their food. He felt the beads of sweat roll down his face as she touched Nino lightly on the arm. He also felt the constricting on his heart as Nino leaned closer in response.

Lowering his head, Jun tore his eyes away and robotically reached for his wallet. He removed a few thousand yen notes and laid them slowly on the table. Getting up to leave, Jun allowed himself one last glance at the picturesque couple. The two of them were sharing a joke as the food arrived.

Jun watched as the table soon became adorned with expensive French food. He noted with concern that Nino flinched slightly at the food before taking a bite. Smiling bitterly, Jun beckoned for the waitress before finally leaving the restaurant.

He swore it would be the last time he ever paid for Nino.

Nino sat in the bar awaiting his friend’s return from Las Vegas. It had been two weeks, two long weeks, since Jun left for Hanadan filming. Two weeks since Nino found out. Sho and Ohno had approached him the day after Jun left and told him.

It was an impossibly awkward conversion filled with apologies and silence. Ohno had only decided to tell him after three consecutive nights of drunk Jun and Sho was there because Ohno needed a backup.

Jun had feelings for Nino. Feelings other than indifference and barely veiled annoyance. Affections, as Sho had put it. The news had left Nino numb with confusion and conflict at first. But now, now Nino was sure of how he felt and he was ready to tell Jun.

Jun entered the bar and nodded as Nino made a move to stand up. Nino gave Jun a small smile, a genuine smile, as his friend approached the corner stool. Jun seemed to ignore the effort and stood by the empty seat. Before Nino could offer him the chair, Jun spoke.

“I’m tired and I have filming in exactly five hours. So if you want a meal you’ll need to find someone else to pay for it.” Nino restrained himself from physically recoiling at Jun’s harsh words and coughed instead.

“I’m not asking for a meal.” Jun hesitated but finally sat down.

“I-J-Jun.”

“What?”

“I like you too.” Jun narrowed his eyes and turned away from Nino. Moments of unbearable silence passed before Jun finally responded. And it wasn’t the response Nino was looking for.

“I’m too tired for this crap Nino.”

“I’m not joking Jun. I like you. I really like you.”

“Just go home.”

“Not unless you come with me.” Jun turned around and glared sharply at him.

“There are consequences to your words Nino.”

“I know. So?” Instead of answering, Jun got off his stool and stood towering just shy of Nino’s lips.

“Is this what you really want?” Nino hesitated before nodding once and leaned into the waiting lips. The slow and shy first kiss soon turned passionate and needy. Jun suddenly became aware of his surroundings and how public they were. He pulled away reluctantly and slipped an arm around Nino’s slender waist.

“We should go somewhere else.”

“Like my house?” Nino smirked. Instead of a sarcastic reply though, Nino received his first of many authentic Jun smiles.

“Or mine.” Jun moved them towards the exit when he felt Nino pulling back.

“What’s the matter?”

“I didn’t pay for the drinks yet.”
