Ohno sighed looking out the window. The ocean looked beautiful under the night sky. The waves were lapping against the moonlit beach. He could hear Aiba’s boisterous laugh resonating from the far corner of the beach.
“I wanna be there too,” Ohno muttered with a pout.
“So do I actually,” Sho handed Ohno a beer bottle and sat next him at the window, gazing longingly at the party down at the beach.
“You can see the others down there if you squint a bit,” Ohno said accepting the beer.
“Yeah. Besides, we can hear those idiots all the way over here,” Sho nodded taking a sip of his beer.
They continued watching, the waves and the other members having the time of their life, in silence.
They had already consumed a 6 pack and were working on their second case when Ohno, wailing loudly, turned to look at Sho.
“It’s not fair. Why do I have to wear the dress? Can’t I and Nino both wear tuxedos?”
Sho looked at Ohno, slightly tipsy himself, “How is it that you ended up having to wear a dress?”
Ohno grabbed another bottle and proceeded to explain, “Because…”
“Yes…”
Ohno, who was gazing out at the party, looked at Sho confused, “What?”
“You were explaining to me why you’ve to wear a dress tomorrow,” Sho explained hiccupping.
Ohno looked at Sho still slightly confused before the confusion cleared away. Continuing to drink the beer from the bottle in his hand, Ohno muttered with another pout, “Ah… right, the dress… well…you see…I kinda lost a bet…”
Sho raised an eyebrow at Ohno, who was already lost in thoughts as he narrated what had happened.
It happened on a bright sunny morning. He had a rare day off. No filming the drama, no other programs scheduled for him. He had been happy that the sky was clear and sunny. He would finally get to go on a little fishing trip. He had been longing to go fishing for quite sometime now - since the drama began to be honest. He had already told Nino that he would be gone for the day. To his surprise Nino had agreed without any complaints. Of course Nino hadn’t complained. He was too engrossed in his new DS game to pay attention to anything around him.
Ohno was almost out of the door, when Nino suddenly put down his DS. Ohno just had to step into his shoes to go off on his fishing trip.
“That was a good game. Oh-chan… where are you going?” Nino asked stretching his body, getting off the couch he had been slouching on for the past 5 hours and 10 minutes to be precise.
Ohno looked back confused at the question, his right leg already in the shoe.
“I’m going fishing. I already told you an hour ago and you just nodded at me.”
“I don’t remember agreeing to any such thing.”
“But… but… it’s a beautiful day… The boat place is even holding a boat for me,” Ohno looked at Nino with soulful eyes.
Nino thought for a second. Oh-chan looked very pretty and not to mention needy with that look on his face. He walked over to Ohno and gently slid his arms around Ohno and whispered into Ohno’s ear, “Can I come too?”
Ohno was completely taken aback by the request. Nino never made requests, only demands. Besides, since when did Nino start taking an interest in fishing? However, the question was completely erased from Ohno’s mind as another thought replaced it.
‘Nino wants to go fishing with me. Ah, the two things I love the most… Nino and fishing… how perfect can life be?’
“Ok. I’ll wait for you outside then,” Ohno replied happily.
“Give me five minutes then. I’ll just go wash and change. Don’t talk to strangers outside,” Nino warned Ohno as he went into the bathroom.
They had gone down to the dock and rented the boat Ohno had on hold. The lake was calm and Ohno was ready to throw in his line when Nino spoke, “Ne Oh-chan. We should make things more interesting.”
Ohno looked at Nino, pausing in what he was doing, “How?”
“If I catch the biggest fish today, you’ll do as I say,” Nino smiled innocently.
Ohno grinned at that. “Sure. And if I catch the biggest fish, will you do as I ask?”
At Nino’s nod Ohno smiled even more brightly. Ohno was quite confident that he’d win this little game. After all, Ohno had been studying the weather, the fishing techniques and even the best lures to get the best fish around here for quite a while now. Ohno thought he’d finally have Nino at his mercy… not that he actually knew what he’d ask Nino to do.
Ohno hadn’t counted on the fact that Nino kept tabs on Ohno’s hobbies. Nino had secretly read every fishing book Ohno brought home. He had even gone on practice rounds a couple of times when he had no filming and the new DS game wasn’t yet released.
By the end of the day, they were both thoroughly tanned and tired. They looked at their tiny haul once they were on firm ground again. To Ohno’s surprise Nino had the biggest fish between the two.
“By only 1 cm and we only have 1 fish each!” Ohno complained looking at their fishes.
“Doesn’t matter, a bet is a bet,” Nino’s grin spread over his face slowly.
Ohno sighed looking disappointed, but secretly happy that his lover had won.
“Let’s go home. You’ve got a lot of work and I’ll be hungry soon,” Nino said putting their two fishes into a bag of ice.
“So what do you want me to do?” Ohno asked as Nino drove them back to the apartment they shared.
Nino looked at Ohno slyly, “Dinner. Cook dinner for us.”
“That’s it?” Ohno looked surprised.
“No, that’s just the beginning.”
Ohno’s heart skipped a beat at the tone and the look on Nino’s face.
Once they reached home, Nino went straight to the bathroom to shower, while Ohno set out to gut and clean the fishes for their dinner.
He was frying up the fish by the time Nino emerged from the bathroom.
“Dinner will be done in 5 minutes. Do you mind turning off the stove when it’s done Nino? I need a shower too. I stink,” Ohno asked looking up from the kitchen.
Nino shrugged, “Go take a shower. I need you clean for what I have in mind anyway.”
Ohno walked into the bathroom leaving the rest of the kitchen duty to Nino. He was blissfully soaking in the tub unaware of Nino’s plans.
They had had peaceful dinner. Nino had seduced Ohno into bed soon after dinner, leaving the dishes to soak in the sink.
Ohno smiled at the memory, coming back to the present. Sho was listening to his story aptly. Both of them still drinking and completely wasted by now.
Sho waited for Ohno to continue the story, but Ohno was already looking out the window at the party on the beach.
“O-Ohno-kun. That doesn’t explain the dress. You only narrated one of your fishing stories!!!” Sho complained looking at Aiba’s silhouette in the campfire on the beach.
“Oh… right… it happened after that…” Ohno slipped back into his thoughts, gazing at Nino.
Ohno and Nino were still panting on the bed, their clothes strewn around the bedroom. Ohno was happy and content and he said so to Nino.
Nino smiled looking up at Ohno lazily. “Oh-chan. I want you to wear a dress for our wedding.”
Ohno frowned. His mind taking almost a full 10 minutes to process what Nino had just said. By then, Nino was already slipping into sleep.
“What did you just say Nino?”
“What? You didn’t hear me? I said you’ll be wearing a dress for our wedding.”
“What wedding?” Ohno panicked for a second.
“The wedding next month,” Nino had said looking up at Ohno, awake again at Ohno’s question.
“Whose wedding?”
“Our wedding…”
“Eh? But Nino… you didn’t even ask me to marry you…”
“Of course I did. You said yes and we even fixed a date for the ceremony. The invitations will arrive next week.”
“But I wasn’t informed,” Ohno said sitting up on the bed.
“What do you mean you weren’t informed? You agreed to marry me… for most people, that would mean they don’t need to be informed separately that there will be a wedding…” Nino said looking at Ohno’s confused face.
“When did this happen? This agreement and the proposal?”
“Oh, well, remember that day after the concert… you and Sho-san and Aiba went drinking?”
At Ohno’s nod, Nino continued, “I asked you when you returned to our hotel room. We were in the bed… actually, we were in pretty much the same state as now…” Nino grinned.
“Eh? But, I don’t remember…”
Nino looked hurt, “So, you’re telling me that you don’t want to marry me?”
“No no… of course I want to marry you. I love you so much and we’re already living together and marriage would be logical…” Ohno said urgently trying to ease away Nino’s look of hurt.
Nino smiled again, the sly-ness of the smile going unnoticed by Ohno, “So you’ll marry me?” he asked conveniently forgetting to inform Ohno that they really hadn’t set a date that drunken night for the wedding.
“Well, yes…”
“And you’ll wear the dress,” Nino said turning over, looking up at the ceiling, plans brewing in his head.
“I… can’t we both…”
Nino interrupted Ohno, “You lost the bet today Ohno… you promised you’d do what I asked you to do…”
Ohno pouted as he slid deeper into the covers, “Umm… when did you say the wedding was?”
Sho laughed, his laughter echoing through the empty room. He turned to look at Ohno and said in a loud voice, “So, you were conned into wearing the dress?”
Ohno turned his attention to Sho, his concentration on the past broken by Sho’s laughter, “I guess you could say that…”
Sho looked thoughtful, as thoughtful as a drunken man could look, and said to Ohno between hiccups, “But Ohno-kun…Nino called Aiba last month saying something about the wedding date being decided in a hurry”.
“Eh? But that’s not right. Nino said we decided the wedding date on that day when the concert ended…”
Sho shrugged taking another sip, “All I know is that Aiba was flailing about a month ago about how they had to do so many things before the date and how they had no time to rush a wedding ceremony in just four weeks. He was even complaining how Nino could have at least told you that the date you set was a couple of months away…”
Ohno pouted drunkenly, “So, he made up the date too?”
Sho shrugged, “You should probably ask Nino if you want to confirm that. Are you going to not show up tomorrow?”
Ohno sighed shaking his head, “No. That would hurt Nino and besides, I do love that guy so much… and I-I want to marry him.” Ohno’s face turned red at his admission.
Sho laughed at Ohno’s blushing face.
“But Sho-chan… how come we’re here alone while they are down there having a party?” Ohno asked looking at Sho with a concentrated frown on his face.
“Aiba said that the bride can’t attend a bachelor party.”
“Oh…ok. But wait, why am I the bride? Aren’t we both grooms? Shouldn’t I also be having a fun time at a bachelor party?”
“Well, you’re the one wearing dress tomorrow… only brides wear dresses you know.”
Ohno nodded solemnly drinking more of his beer, “But why are you here with me?”
Sho pouted looking down at the party, “He said something along the lines of girlfriends sticking together…I’m not sure I understand what he meant by that though…”
Ohno gave Sho a pat on the shoulder, “Uh… so when you and Aiba marry, you’ll be the one wearing a dress. I understand what Aiba was saying…”
Sho stood up suddenly with a tiny scream, “Eh… No way… I won’t be wearing a dress… I’ll be firm and tell him I’ll be in a tuxedo…”
“I see… so you guys are marrying too?” Ohno asked leaving Sho to blush at the question.
“Well, I don’t know… Aiba hasn’t asked me yet…” Sho sat down suddenly finding his fingernails more interesting.
Ohno laughed, but let the question drop. “You know, we should have a party too… right here…”
Sho nodded suddenly brightening up at the idea of a party of their own, “Yeah… a bachelorette party…”
Ohno hiccupped and smiled at Sho, “That would nice… we can order more drinks and … oh we should invite some people over…”
Sho nodded pulling out his cell phone, “I know one person who’d definitely want to be in your party rather than Nino’s party…”
“Oh who?” Ohno asked excited at the idea of inviting people over.
“You’ll see…” Sho said typing away a message and sending it.
Meanwhile down at the beach, at Nino’s bachelor party, Chinen was sitting down with his friends. They were too young to drink and so they were given orange juices. They looked quite silly being there. Especially since Chinen couldn’t stop his crying at the loss of his beloved Ohno-san.
Nino had insisted on inviting the kid over just to make sure he knew who finally had Ohno.
However, when Chinen’s cell phone buzzed and Chinen read the message, he wiped off his tears and a smile appeared on his face. He ran up to Nino and gave him a superior look.
“You might be marrying Ohno-san tomorrow, but Ohno-san still wants me!”
“What are you talking about kid?” Nino asked, already wasted to the point of not knowing left from right.
“Look!” Chinen held his phone to Nino, “Ohno-san is having a party in his room and he wants me to go. I’m so happy Ohno-san wants me in his room for a little party.”
Nino sobered up pretty quickly at the message. “WHAT!!!!”
Chinen smiled and started skipping towards the hotel, “I’m coming to you Ohno-san…”
“Party’s over… I’m going back to the room,” Nino said as he ran past Chinen. He stopped and turned back long enough to tell Chinen, “No need to go up there… Oh-chan is not having a party… and if you know what’s best for you, you better not show up to disturb me and Oh-chan in bed!!!”
Chinen looked at Nino’s running back and burst into wails again, his friends trying to comfort him so that he’d calm down a little. Aiba and Jun ran after Nino giving Chinen a momentary glance and a pat on the shoulder.
The last thing they remembered that night was Nino kicking Sho out of the room.
The truth about Nino’s fish … was buried in the dark recesses of Nino’s mind forever.
