Jun crossed his legs, leaning back in his plush, maroon leather divan, barely absorbing the ranting his high and mighty mother was giving him. He scrutinized his polished fingernails hardly noticing what his mother had just told him.

“You need to be more careful, Jun! You killed a woman in public! A mother, at that!”

He shrugged and offhandedly said, “She was in the way…”

“You watch that attitude of yours, boy, or I’ll send you to Africa with your sister. Is that clear? Now, can you imagine how that poor boy feels right now? He has lost his mother and you have the sympathetic capacity of a blunt needle.”

Jun muttered under his breath and rolled his eyes. The woman, dressed in an elegant black dress, diamonds gleaming on her earlobes and fingers, crossed the room in long strides, stopping in front of him, and drew back her arm. A resounding slap delivered by his mother right across his face sent a startled Jun deeper into the couch, clutching his sore cheek.

“LEARN YOUR PLACE, BOY! THAT SWEET YOUNG BOY HAS JUST LOST THE ONLY PERSON HE HAS IN THE WORLD! YOU KILLED HER AND YET YOU HAVE THE AUDACITY TO ROLL YOUR EYES!!!”

Jun could do nothing but gape at the ominous visage his mother was exuding. He could see a fire in her eyes, the same fire that lit up her face whenever she defended him when he was younger.

“You will take care of that boy. We will take him in as a ward. I have already arranged everything. As of right now, Ohno-kun is under our care. YOU will take care of him. One of the guest rooms has already been prepared to be his room. You will accompany him to his old house and you will help him bring his stuff here. The funeral will be tomorrow. You will also take him to the University next week where he has been re-scheduled to take the exam.” Her eyes narrowed dangerously. “You will not hurt that boy. And you will APOLOGIZE. IS THAT CLEAR?!”

Jun nodded, taken aback. The pale, graceful woman turned and disappeared out of the room, the chiffony black skirt of her dress billowing behind her.

Fear pinned him to the chair he occupied. Everything was different now. Very, very different. In 2 seconds of whirling dust and blood, everything in his wonderful life had come crashing down on his head, like piercing shards of broken glass, penetrating his skin, drawing out immeasurable amounts of pain and blood.

“MAMA!!!!!”

He flinched, horrible memories rushing back at him. The image of his mother’s broken, bloody body trapped itself in front of his eyes; his hands tightened around a bloody silver locket. He sucked in a breath in a quick spurt, his eyes teeming over with restrained tears. Mama… He closed his eyes, trying to remember her, anything about her that wasn’t bloody or broken, anything about her when she was alive. Her smile, her warm embrace, her steadfast faith that as long as they had each other everything would be alright. But… But…

He cracked, releasing an uncontrollable sob. A wail soon followed as memories and tears fell one by one from his eyes onto the silver locket in his fingers. Mama… Mama…

“You’re going to be fine, Satoshi. I love you.”

He felt helpless. He couldn’t do anything for her. He couldn’t even save her. Though blinded by his tears, he sought to open the locket. Always, said the inscription. His heart broke and he clutched the pendant to where his heart used to be, his tears gushing with endlessly breathless hiccups.

He was all alone now, in a darkness that engulfed him in his grief.

Jun took more than a few minutes to shake off the effect of his mother’s threatening advances. Shock was quickly followed by incredulity which changed rapidly into irritation. He gritted his teeth at scowled at the door, his mother’s disappearing back looping in his vision. Apologize? Him? Ha. He’d sooner drink his own piss.

But he supposed he did have to do something about that boy. But no way would he take care of that runt. It would conflict with his carefree lifestyle which he was so content with right now. He rose from the couch and dusted himself off, his fingers unconsciously stroking is bruised cheek.

“Akanishi!’

His butler-slash-personal assistant-slash-driver came forward expectantly, head lowered in a polite bow. The youngish oldish man had been in the Matsumoto family’s service as Jun’s personal slave for over 10 years now, growing up alongside him. He had been witness to more than just a few of the young master’s cruelty, having often times been the one to accomplish such harshness, but this, this was the one malice he found hard to swallow. He... Jun… They… had killed a mother...

“Young master?”

“You know what to do.”

“I shall take care of it, young master.”

Ohno stared down at his feet, refusing to look anywhere than the familiar. He had calmed down now, but felt hollow, terribly hollow inside. His tears have all dried up and he was faced with a dread that bubbled from the pit of his stomach and spread throughout his entire body, down to his shaking fingers. What would happen to him now? And where the hell was he?

He had not noticed anything around him since the accident that left him an orphan. He had been forced into the shiny black car by a young man with expensive clothes and an annoyed yet indifferent face. And then he was here, in this gleaming mansion.

He was too afraid to move, too afraid to even look around at this terrifyingly new place. He brushed stray strands of his reddish brown hair away from his face. God, what is this place? The air smelled like the cold air from a refrigerator. He saw his reflection glaring up at him from the marble floor. Did dust even exist in this world?

It’s like no one even lived here.

“That’s because no one usually does…”

Ohno jumped, startled at the voice so very near his ear. “D-did I just say that out l-loud?” He turned to face the other person, scanning his face for a name. It was the driver, Aka-something. His eyes hardened slightly.

“Here in this house, Jun-sama is usually the only one who lives here. His sister is in Africa on a volunteer mission. His father lives in Paris and the lady of the house, his mother visits here only once or twice a year. That’s why here, Jun-sama’s word is law…”

The man, around his late 20’s or early 30’s, lowered his head but held Ohno’s gaze. “Look, I’m really truly sorry about the death of your mother, even more so because I had a part in it. It was an accident but it could have been prevented… Truly, I’m sorry…”

“I… I know…” The ice behind Ohno’s eyes melted.

“Jun-sama will not apologize…”

“I k-kinda got that feeling…” The older man bowed, half in politeness, half in apology. “B-but... what happens to me now?”

“You, Ohno-san, are now under the Matsumoto family’s care as a ward.”

“B-b-but… what?”

“If you’ll follow me to the car, we shall fetch your belongings. Lady Matsumoto has arranged it. Tomorrow shall be your mother’s funeral.”

“Oh… A-aka…”

“Akanishi, sir.”

“Akanishi-san… Can we r-ride a d-d-different c-c-car? Ohno said timidly, a shadow darkening his features.

“Of course, sir.”
