while it is a problem for people to think one male in a gay relationship is the 'girl', i don't think it came from a place of homophobia in this case but rather ignorance.
i agree, she probably didn't mean to be outright offensive and get negative press. but she's an adult, living in a developed country, and works in the entertainment business where she surely meets lots of people everyday, and that includes gay people. i refuse to believe this was the first gay couple she's ever met and therefore she didn't know how to act around them. it's more likely that her comments are a part of this cutesy "my oh my, these foreigners are so bizarre, what should i do" act japanese idols sometimes play up.
Just want to state here that I am gay as the day is long and I still don't think it's a homophobic comment, just ignorant. I don't know genders are so important anyway, if someone calls me a "girl" or anything like that, I don't mind. Sometimes I believe people think it's offensive because we live in a world where "women are inferior", so calling someone a "girl" is still an offense. IDK, though, just speaking for me, don't mean to be rude or anything.
Actually it just sounds like an awkward situation brought on by the fan's request that she "convince" his boyfriend he's gay. Sounds more like he's got some issues.
Meh, I figured the OP's title was misleading since I hadn't heard anything like this from real sources, but thought I might have actually missed something. Guess not.

I actually thought the comment on the guy giving them a gift was more rude.
