seems like you did. claiming that gay people are "neither men nor women" is homophobic.

i agree, she probably didn't mean to be outright offensive and get negative press. but she's an adult, living in a developed country, and works in the entertainment business where she surely meets lots of people everyday, and that includes gay people. i refuse to believe this was the first gay couple she's ever met and therefore she didn't know how to act around them. it's more likely that her comments are a part of this cutesy "my oh my, these foreigners are so bizarre, what should i do" act japanese idols sometimes play up.

not just Japan.. in my country is also like this..

oh sure, nowadays ppl are more open about gays in my country, but i still meet quite a few ppl here who are a bit awkward around gays... not all are hostile, but most of them just don't know how to react... but i guess i can't compare everyone to me, but i do hope they'll grow out of this awkward-ness soon and just accept everyone as ppl... it's work in progress but i have hope... v(^-^)

Since this article's original source is in English we have no way of knowing what she actually said. Additionally, we don't know if the individual/s in question identified themselves as gay or straight. Just saying you like "men" or dressing like a "woman" is not an identifier. I have and still do know many people who don't identify as men, women, gay, straight or anything else. As one of these individuals myself, I think I would rather start a dialogue with someone and ask them about their meaning before flaming.

As for the part about identifying one as the "girlfriend" and thus the other as the "boyfriend". I think its a way to put this in super simple terms that don't need to be explained too much. Like terms used in my community "top", "bottom", "pitcher", "catcher", "lip-stick" or "stud".

i'm sorry, i used up all my strength defending this issue yesterday, today this post and all the ignorance and excuses for lgbt insensitivity in it is making me sick, i'm out.

but let me just tell you this, it's still very rude for an outsider to use the terms you quoted, that allude to whether someone is an active or a passive party in a sexual intercourse, without people's consent. especially when talking to a complete stranger. it's a private thing. it's okay for the couple from the article to identify themselves with those words, it's not okay for a stranger, like a-chan here, to do that. do you know these straight people who, when meeting a gay couple, ask them: so, which one of you is the woman and which one the man? i'm sure you've heard of people acting like that. that's the problem here.

I understand your point. I'll leave it at that. I myself am a member of this community and although I didn't see the issue in this article doesn't mean that another wouldn't. I do caution that we have no Japanese to compare so we don't know what was said exactly. I also spent a year of my life working for artinfo so I know that a lot is left up to the writer working with a translator.

I took that to mean transgendered. TONS of people all over the world have no idea how to address that out of ignorance, much less people from a traditional and repressed country like Japan.
