Harry Potter first book - first edition

So my sister was telling me about a first edition of the first Harry Potter book (The Sorcerer's Stone) selling at an auction for $18,000. See the article.

If it's Philosophers stone then it might be the first British edition, which couldbe different/more valuable than the first American edition.

...or maybe not i dunno.

Crap, no it's Sorcerer's. I don't know why I typed that. LOL! I think the American might be more valuable because less were published originally.

I am not at all an expert, but it occurs to me you might want to consult one. There's probably a forum on the net somewhere where you can ask this question and get a fairly good idea of what you can sell it for now and if it makes sense to wait.

Also, I have a friend who deals in antiques and rare editions. Not exactly "Harry Potter" kind, but the principles are the same. I can't tomorrow (the culmination of show-prep insanity), but Tuesday, if you like, I can ask him for advice.

Uhm..you know what?
I'm the kind of person who enters in a book store and a smile of devotion spreads on her face. I LOVE the atmosphere, all the time spent reading sum ps and authors bios..aww. So I think I won't be able to sell a book even if I wanted.
