Harry Potter first book - first edition

So my sister was telling me about a first edition of the first Harry Potter book (The Sorcerer's Stone) selling at an auction for $18,000. See the article.

Pertinent section: First editions of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" - published in the United States as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" - are valuable because of their rarity, the auction house said. The publishers produced between 500 and 1,000 copies in the book's first run.

Well, I decided to check because I was fairly certain I have a first edition ... and yeah, I'm pretty sure I do. After all it says "First American Edition, October 1998" on it. So, do you think this is for real? Should I try and sell it or wait a bit more for it to be REALLY worth something? I'm not that into HP, I can just buy any old edition hardback to replace it and I'll be happy.

books, harry potter
