The water in the trough was freezing. Laura came to immediately and clutched at Bill. He held her tightly keeping both their heads slightly above the water. The burning barn and the ice water weren’t the worst of their problems as bullets began whizzing just overhead.
Bill had to think fast, grabbing Laura as the enemy was reloading and heave both of them over and out of the large watering trough. They landed with a thud on the hard ground.
“I guess they know we’re here,” Bill huffed as he pulled out his water logged pistol. Shaking it vigorously he aimed over the trough and let off a few shots just so they knew they were still alive and fighting.
He was trying to narrow down where the two were hiding. There was a large clump of trees directly across; he figured that’s where they were but he couldn’t get a good shot at them.
Laura heard the thunder of horses. She heaved a sigh of relief as she saw the gathering dust in the distance growing ever closer. It was Doc Cottle and a group of men to help with the fire.
“Oh Bill, thank goodness.” She shivered as the cold water settled.
“Just in time. I’m almost out of bullets.”
Most of the men headed toward the barn to attempt to put out the fire.
Several broke off and headed for the treeline, dodging bullets which ceased as the one legged man mounted his horse and rode off toward town.
Tory was not as fortunate as Galen, the town’s blacksmith, jumped from his ride and landed on her. Laura heard her protests, but Galen was too strong and brought her to where Bill and Laura stood.
Laura tried to show compassion. “Tory?”
Tory uttered one word, “Bitch.”
