My voice was Laura’s now. I would speak for her and her family.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I have tried many cases; seen and heard the worst destruction one human can do to another. Some are crimes of passion, some of opportunity, but some are inexplicable. This case before you is one such case. The lives of a father, two sisters and an unborn child were needlessly taken by this man before you, Gaius Baltar." I looked him directly in the eye.

"Some call him brilliant, a genius, but he wasn’t smart enough to say no to his ninth drink that evening. Who in all his wisdom chose to get behind the wheel, drive his car and in doing so took four innocent lives," I walked up to him, wanting my next words to sink into his very soul.

"Gaius Baltar played God that night, choosing who lives and dies. Today he comforts himself in the knowledge that it really wasn't his fault. It was the bartender. It was the alcohol. It was the car. It wasn't me,” I’d heard that excuse so many times.

"You cannot play God and then wash your hands of the crimes you've committed. Sooner or later, the day comes when you can't hide from the things that you’ve done." I turned to face the jury.

"I have to wonder. What kind of humanity are we? Are we a people worth saving? When we commit murder because of our gluttony, stupidity and explain it away as narcissistic behavior, then we refuse to accept the responsibility for anything that we've done." I could feel Laura's will pushing me along.

"I ask that you find the defendant guilty for the deaths of Edward, Cheryl, Sandra and her unborn baby. Thank you.”

Gaius whimpered.

Laura looked only at me.
