These Things, They Go Away [Gen, PG]

Sweet Charity fic for counteragent. Thank you for waiting so patiently!

These Things, They Go Away [Gen, PG, 1150 words]
West goes Sam.

The urge to explain the hell out of this is strong, but instead, I'll offer the song that provided both title and inspiration: R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming". Beta by the ever amazing electricalgwen.

Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse. )

Thanks so much! I was kind of terrified of this after I finished it; I think I just read it so many times that I couldn't even tell if it worked anymore. I'm glad to know that it does, though! =)

Oh, wow. Beautiful and haunting. You've got quite the way with prose, my dear.

THis is GORGEOUS. Atmospheric and achy. It really recalls the song--I was singing it in my head this morning after reading the piece, and it works extremely well as accompaniment--almost like a vid to the imagery here.

The descriptions are stunning--I especially love the sun's "dug six feet under the horizon" (Awesome!!) and Dean's "skin shining silver" in the moonlight (beautiful).

But it's this piece of dialogue that really breaks me:
After he looks at Dean, after Dean says, “Sammy,” then, “Don’t you get it?”

Sam pretends to sleep, pretends he was right when he thought he was ready to lose Dad, pretends he knew he was going to lose Dean all along.

Because Sam does get it, he's just too stubborn to admit it. Oh, Sam. Oh, Dean!

Just love them sparring in the moonlight. That mental image will stay with me.

Thanks again for donating your time to Sweet Charity. I love it!

I'm sorry I missed the deadline--thank you so much for putting up with me getting being schedule!

I am hugely relieved that you liked this! Your idea to have them sparring was such a lovely visual inspiration, and I'm so glad you're pleased with the way the rest of the story grew around it--especially the image of them sparring in the moonlight. I love these boys and water, and when I read "sparring" I just knew immediately that it had to be under the night sky, at a lake. I'm so happy that it's something you enjoyed.

Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to write for you! <3
