I am writing my SOP and there is a section for me to discuss why my GPA was less than 3.0.  It was 2.92.  I do have very valid reasons: cancer, serious illnesses of my youngest child, and death of a parent. No. That was 13 years ago - focus on your recent (last 60 credits and in-major especially) academic performance.

I'll tell you what I was told-- if you have specific extenuating circumstances that you want addressed, ask one of your LOR writers to address it in their letter. They can make sure to explain what happened in a way that highlights how you have become a better student in spite of your struggles.
