when does their spring semester start? If a school's spring semester doesn't start until later in january, it could be that the staff is out of office until the semester starts up. Also, if it's the first week of classes, then the department administrators are probably busy with other stuff- it's usually the same people who vet applications and app questions, and also do all other administrative work for the grad program. Right now most administrators are running around trying to make sure every class has a classroom, every grad students is signed up for the right classes, and tons of people usually stop by the first week of class for various odds and ends.

Most people don't go to grad school and they think it is like undergrad. Unless you have been there you don't know what it is like. My aunt who doesn't have a degree thinks college is just like high school. When I told her I made Dean's list she was like, "Oh well, it can't be that hard, why haven't you made it before? You must not be that bright."

The only Mike Robins I know of was a basketball player turned motivational speaker. Maybe it is someone they know personally, that they thought wasn't that bright?

They might not be in the their office until the week before school starts. Keep trying and call different times of the day. Try calling early in the am, around 9. If they are in a different time zone make sure you are calling during their hours.

If it says not to e-mail them, then don't e-mail them.

I agree that they might not be answering because classes have not started yet, or they just started, and either they are not there or are swamped with other work. Keep trying, you should get through to them eventually.

I know it is frustrating, there was one school I applied to that I could never manage to reach by phone.

What is your question for the program? We might be able to help you either figure out the answer, or figure out exactly who you should contact. I wouldn't email except as a dead-last resort, considering that their FAQ explicitly instruct you not to.
