Which Road?

I'm planning on applying to grad school this fall to begin in fall 2010. My focus is either going to be French linguistics or straight linguistics. My research interests are phonetics/phonology/orthography and how they relate to first and second language acquisition. So I can't figure out which department I should lean more heavily on ( Read more... )

All I can say is that it is not an erroneous assumption to think you can start over in a more focused PhD program if you want to get more specific; it is actually quite likely that you can do that.

Sweet. Although I will be in debt up to my eyeballs, it'll be nice to have the option.

What school are you studying at/did you study at, if I may ask? Do you think it's necessary to find an advisor who works specifically with your language of interest?

Check Dr. Montreuil at UT! He's scary-awesome, and is a phonology master. However, he's THE phonology guy, and may be a bit intimidating at first. I would also suggest Dr. Birdsong, but he can be kind of callous in his e-mails, and is the graduate advisor in the department. He does a lot more with SLA and phonological acquisition than anything else. Hope that helps. I can always offer more information about the linguistics department (because French linguistics majors are required to take courses in linguistics proper), as well. :)

Haha, I've been in touch (if that's what you could call it) with Dr. Birdsong, although after I replied to his email requesting a look at my transcript, he hasn't replied for, oh, two months now? But UT is a great program, and I'm glad to hear that F-ling students get to hobnob with the other ling students.

Are you at UT right now?

When I was looking for grad schools to apply to last year, as part of the weeding process I went through this (entire) list:

It may take time, but it's a great way to get to know what's out there--at least as far as general linguistics goes.
Good luck!
