Which Road?

I'm planning on applying to grad school this fall to begin in fall 2010. My focus is either going to be French linguistics or straight linguistics. My research interests are phonetics/phonology/orthography and how they relate to first and second language acquisition. So I can't figure out which department I should lean more heavily on.

I know McGill has the best SLA program, and U Hawaii has an excellent one as well, but UCLA is the best for phonetics, and keeps their applied linguistics program pretty separate. I'm also applying to UT Austin, U of I Urbana, and U of Indiana Bloomington for their excellent French linguistics programs, figuring if I decide I want to go more specific after the M.A., I can start over in a more focused Ph.D. program. Or is this an erroneous assumption?

If any of you linguists out there know there's a professor out there who's perfect for me to study under, I'd love to hear it. I was a Japanese major in college, so I'm also very interested in East Asian languages, and I wouldn't want to go to a school without at least a department for them.

Thank you in advance for any advice!
