How far in advance is it appropriate to apply? I am thinking ahead for a Fall 2010 start, and the deadline is March 1st of next year. Obviously I won't be bombarding them with stuff now or anytime soon, but I doubt I'll be running around at the last minute either. When is it okay to start sending bits and pieces?

timing, application process

Last year I was told that the earliest I should send ANYTHING for a Dec 1 2009 deadline was Sept 1 2009. They said things sent too far in advance, esp. over the summer, have a higher chance of getting lost and/or misfiled.

I guess as an add-on to this question: what about GRE scores? I'm looking at Fall 2010 as well, but since I'm studying abroad, I'm taking my GRE this month. Is it a problem?

GRE scores are good for five years--that is, ETS will issue reports with the scores of any tests administered during the previous five years. Some programs are a little bit stricter with their deadlines, but the strictest I've ever seen is a program saying that scores are good for 3 years. So you should be just fine. Good luck!

But also, you get to send to four schools (I believe) for free, so don't waste that! :)

Not at all--I took my general in 06 and subject in 07...and just applied for fall 09 admission. Not a single school lost my scores!

i donno about what programs you're applying to, but both schools i applied to really pounded in the fact that they wanted you to send everything all at once in one envelope. so "bits and pieces" might not be the best idea.

i mean lors (which have to come directly from the writers), and gre score which is sent by ets or whatever it's called. it's not possible for me to get it in one envelope.

They usually request that your online application being submitted prior to sending in LOR, transcripts, writing sample, etc.

Please, pleaaaase, take it from me, a person who had to be on the phone everyday last week with three different schools over this matter, it's much better to wait until october or november at the earliest to send your stuff in if your deadline are in March ( ... )

Okay, thanks, this is great advice. As far as the LOR goes, the school I'm planning to apply at has their own form that they'd like the writers to use, and they specifically asked it be sent directly. But I'll ask the recommenders to make sure to save it as a precaution.

In that case then they should have their stuff together, expecting the app to be coming into the offices in a piece-meal fashion so you should be fine. I'd suggest calling the admissions office maybe a month after your LORs were sent just to make sure and you should be good to go.

And no prob. If anything the crap I've gone through can help someone in the future! :D
