Some state require you to have health insurance (esp in school).

You know some of your questions can be answered if you did a little looking, or called the school for info.

1) I see didn't anything in my department's admissions information, so I assumed it wasn't necessary. If you didn't see it on the English website, I would assume the same thing although a quick email to a departmental secretary (if you have time) would allow you to be sure.

2. a) I put $2000.00 for moving costs, but that depends on where you live and how much stuff you have to ship/move. I live in Iowa right now, but I don't have anything substantial to ship. b) I think medical means that bills you have already amassed and/or anticipated treatments that will occur on a regular basis. I consider insurance and regular doctor visits to be included under the umbrella of "normal living expenses."

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reminder. I skipped right past that section, and had planned to submit Berkeley today.

1. I don't think so. We choose specialties, not specific faculty.

2.I think you might be overthinking this. When I moved cross-country last year (in a car--no U-Haul), I spent about $500 on gas (damn $4 gas!). My stuff was stored with a friend, and I spent no more than $500 setting up my new place, so I think $1000 isn't a bad lowball estimate.

On the fellowships page: I really have no idea what Berkeley was going for there... I underestimated my assets significantly and would justify what I gave them on the basis that I currently plan to spend much of my savings before enrolling if I had to, and I didn't disclose my IRA because I know those are supposed to be excluded from federal aid calculations... but I don't see departments really making funding decisions on the basis of these questions, this page of the application seemed like busywork to me. And I told them in the text box that they needed to make their instructions clearer.
