Timeline: what do I do next?

I'm applying to PhD programs for Fall 2009 admissions. I've already done the GRE+TOEFL, obtained my transcripts, got a working draft of my SOP, asked for LORs and handed out packets to my recommenders. My writing sample is a published paper, so I'm not going to revise it (except maybe the format, which I suspect is quite different than what is ( Read more... )

Sounds like you've done everything.

Sometimes there is a letdown after a big project like this, so maybe that's what you're going through now.

Well, what *are* the deadlines for the schools you're considering? Most of mine are between Dec. 15 and Jan 15, so I'm currently writing SOPs and revising my CV, and will be asking my recommenders to write letters next. If your program deadlines are in that date range or later, I'd say you're doing very well and are ahead of the curve. If your deadlines are sooner (I know I saw a school with an October deadline), double check that everything has been received, especially the rec letters before they're due, just in case something went wrong with your recommenders.

Edited to add: I just saw that you mentioned your first deadline is in 10 weeks. In that case, I think you're doing very well and won't absolutely need to check that everything's arrived for a while.

If *you're* behind schedule, I'm F***ed. I'd say you're far ahead of schedule, so don't get too worried :-)

Do you have a CV? Do you need one?

Do any of your programs have online applications? If they do and the application is available, you could get started on that. (Online applications let you log in/out as often as you want, so you can fill them out over a longer period of time.) Sometimes online applications have extra questions to answer, or restrictions on the SOP that aren't listed elsewhere, so it's good to check it out early.

Thank you to everyone else who answered. Going through this process by myself is confusing and very daunting. I get practically all of my advice from internet websites, which is making me quite unsure of myself. I hope I didn't come off as snobby or anything, because my question really wasn't meant like that.

Starting to fill out the online apps is a good idea! I just found out one SOP has a word limit that wasn't written anywhere else *sigh*. My CV is generally done, I'm just waiting to add some info in November. Thanks for the advice.

As far as GRE scores go, I took the general in 2006 and the subject last year...all the schools I've contacted still have my scores on file, so there's hope! You probably won't have to shell out the $20. I'd still check to be sure, though. :)
