Accepted :)

So I got 4 rejections, and 1 acceptance so far, which is great because that one school is one school of my top choices. I don't really have a linear ranking for these schools. I've simply had 4 tiers in my mind, and this one that accepted me was one of the 3 schools in that top "most desired" tier. Of the schools who still need to reply, only one ( Read more... )

I was the only person not wearing jeans at my visit day, but everyone was wearing nice shirts with their jeans. Wearing chinos or khakis would probably not be amiss, especially as History is a more traditional discipline, no? (I'm in Telecommunications, and the department I visited is more technical-cutting edge-oriented.)

It's important to really be yourself. (I know that's cliched, but it's true.!) When you've been accepted, they're inviting you to visit so you have the opportunity to see if YOU fit. They already feel you're going to fit, otherwise they wouldn't have accepted you! Make a point of having a chat with your prospective advisor if you can - ask him about his current research, maybe ask his opinion of how your particular interests would fit into the department's goals and current research.

Good luck!

History! Woot!

I've been to three admit days so far, so I consider myself an expert. :)

Here's the deal: I don't know if you're a guy or a girl. On guys, I saw everything from jeans and a nice shirt to full suit and tie, and they looked fine. On girls, slacks and a nice shirt were almost ubiquitous. Just wear something comfortable, because Admit Days are pretty long, and understated (i.e. no plunging necklines!) Also keep in mind the weather, if you're traveling to a state/country outside your own climate.
