If it's an application to teach writing, you mainly need to demonstrate that you're a good writer. I assume it's not creative writing but composition, etc., that you'd be teaching the undergrads, so mainly you need to make sure everything is well organized, clear, and concise. I don't think stilted academic language is necessary (if you're an English student, don't go into the jargon of literary criticism or anything), but you should write it like an essay that you'd turn in for a class, or a newspaper article, or something.
