word limits

If I am 20 or so words BELOW the expected word count for a statement of purpose, will that count against me very much?  I just don't think it would read as well if I added even more to it.

They ask for 1000 to 2000 words, and refer to it as brief.  I'm confused anyways.  I'm at 981 or so.

Your post was just so silly and ridiculous! <20 words off! C'mon now, do you REALLY think they'd notice or care? Do you think the professors even KNOW the exact word limits listed on the website? I'd be surprised.
