Question about dropping a course

Throughout my undergrad career, I've been ahead of where I need to be - credit-wise - by an entire year.  Because I wanted to make my time here last (I really enjoy college, and didn't want to end up 3 years in only to realize that I've got nothing left to do), I thought it would be a good idea to double major.  Problem is, I could never figure out

I was an advisor, and I never hesitated to tell students to drop a class if it'll pull down your GPA and you don't need the credits. If it's only one W on the transcript it'll have little or no effect. Probably no effect. I have one on my transcript and I've never even been asked about it. It probably just will demonstrate that you knew you were over your head and could admit it--a mark of maturity!
