1. Matt Frei's description of his recent negative travel experience and past harrowing flights was amusing...but I do hope this is followed up with a serious comparison to the European experience with passenger rights and compensation.

74% doesn't strike me as implausible given the nature of the survey. It sounds like the wording of the questionnaire allowed the respondents to say that they would be unhappy with the tax *unless* the money raised was put towards a particular purpose (e.g. public transport). If I had been one of the respondents, I might have been tempted to tick those boxes.

"Do you think the Government should or should not introduce a system for charging motorists by the mile, during busy periods, to cut congestion?"

I think we may both be overthinking this. :-)

A gut-reaction would certainly be "but they tax my fuel already!" ... and I think Ian's posting provoked enough of that response.

The road pricing thing should be taken with the giant pinch of salt that
is the fanatical opposition on the government's own policy site, with the
e-petitioners against the notion sometimes overwhelming the servers (and
then bitterly regretting the fact that signing means the government gains
entitlement to contact them at least twice to 'respond' AKA campaign).

lots of sculpture being nicked in the UK, and not only metal prices driving
people to take their older bronze coins out of circulation (newer ones have
less copper) and make off with the odd Henry Moore or the ghastly tat in
Lord Archer's garden. Anish Kapoor's missing work has no smelting value:
