Philip Glenister Smiles: Part 1
Featuring: The Forced Smile, The Smirk, The Grin, The Head Tilt Grin, The Laugh and The Times When We're Not Quite Sure What's Going On...

Starring: The Glenister as Ashes!Gene, LOM!Gene, Mack, The Baron, Lawrence & Earp
- with guest appearances by The Simm, Keeley and Matthew Macfadyen.

The Forced Smile

The forced smile is particularly prevalent in Ashes!Gene though makes a very strong appearance as Mack in Clocking Off. It is noted for it's dimples, slightly sarcastic tone and can be, though is not always, followed by verbal and/or physical abuse.

The Smirk

The Glenister is particularly fond of the smirk, a trait he has passed on to Ashes!Gene. Whilst on his own Hunt can be infuriating (quite gorgeous) - add a dash of Bolly and leave to simmer for two seasons and you're guaranteed a delightful expose of The Smirk.

Whether he be intoxicated at Luigi's, Master of his domain or prowling the streets of London, the Gene Genie will never shy from a smirk.
Of particular note is the phenomena of fangirls reations worldwide - ROF: Rapid Onset Flailing.
This is not to be confused with TF: Terminal Flailing - often associated with long term exposure to any form of smiles.

Even whilst only dressed as Ashes!Gene, The Glenister has trouble straying from his mannerisms. There is, however, the tell tale signs of amusement and happiness that are not often associated with Gene and thus can only be attributed to The Glenister.

It has been observed that LOM!Gene is slightly more footloose and fancy free than Ashes!Gene and as a result of this is less likely to smirk at you in angst. He is, however, more prone to smash your head in, whilst smiling.
It should be noted that a good friend of The Glenister - The Simm - seems unable to part with The Glenister's company for more than two years and as a result of this they can often be observed within the same screen. From this Tuesday was born and the likes of smirking Earp is available for all to admire.

Here we stumble across three very different Smirking Glenister's.
Lawrence, who really should know better than to smirk when surrounded by Dame Helen and Julie.
Mack, who's smirk is lessened by his sweetness
and The Baron - who, in all his hatted glory, makes smirking an Olympic sport

The Grin

Ashes!Gene, though very adept at smirking, seems to have trouble maintaining a grin. Perhaps it was his troubled childhood, his loss of Sam and Reign in Manchester or simply because the cliffhanger between seasons two and three is so. bloody. long.
Regardless, he does find the time to grin on the odd occasion, and even then it may be attributed to a certain posh-knickered DI.

Mack knows how it's done, and whilst at times his grin does coincide with deranged grabbing of ironing boards, he is most noted for the cutest Glenister face known to fangirl kind.

Once upon a time The Glenister donned what looks like a monks outfit and tried to convince Natasha McElhone to marry him. Whilst she did, eventually, fangirls united in a combined force to accept on her behalf as William Stafford does little else than be charming and gorgeous and smiley throughout the entire film.
We thus come to the times where The Glenister does little else than be himself, even going so far as to dress himself and oddly enough emerge wearing a cardigan and pink. Fortunately he also wears bunny ears so little can be said beyond *awwww*
Glenister grins are noted for their dimples and showing of teeth in an endearingly gorgeous way.

The Head Tilt Grin

Whilst Mack does a pretty good job tilting and grinning simultaneously, it is The Glenister himself that is particularly noted for perfecting the art of the Head Tilt Grin.

This phenomena allows for multi-angled dimple shots and generally results in fangirls head tilt grinning alongside him.

The Laugh

Alas we come to the laugh, an action that can symbolise joy - see above
Or "your knicked - let me celebrate" - see below.

The Laugh - no one quite knows what causes LOM!Gene to laugh so freely, though recent studies suggest that at all laughing times he is within reaching distance of alcohol. Coincidence?
Regardless, we shall not complain - as laughing Gene brings with him the highest order of dimples. Dimples so delightful both Sammy Boy and his Bolly Knickers would have trouble scowling at him. See below for proof:

The Times We're Not Quite Sure What He's Doing
AKA - The Weird

As stated above, there is no explanation nor comment I can make on the sheer range of crazy exhibited by Mack, other than his predilection to iron is adorable.

Ashes!Gene momentarily forgets that the 70's were last show and engages in some non-scripted disco boogying.

There are no words to describe the sheer awesomeness that is Matthew Macfadyen smothering The Glenister. None.
Meer flailing alone can not capture how epic this moment is.
