google summer of code thoughts?

I saw on /. today that they announced the list of participating orgs for summer of code 2008. sadly, irssi is not one of them :( However, I did read this:

Perhaps bigger org means better cred for the coder doing summer of code, and the possibility of being hired on by a big company? Getting something like this at one of those companies would really be a foot in the door. This would apply to the smaller ones too, but the bigger ones probably have more resources to hire on coders they really enjoy working with.

that is true. i guess what i was sort of hoping is that they'd help the smaller ones become more prominent...it's not an insignificant amount of money. i can think of a few comparatively niche projects that have potential that i'd love to contribute to that could probably use the money more than the bigger ones though...
