The past many weeks were exciting and a lot of things kept me busy, work for one. Part of the excitement was about a trip to Punjab (pictures on their way). And after a long period of lurking on mailing lists, reading policy manuals and the once-in-a-while bug report with a patch, I decided to get a little more active in Debian.

I was trying to apply the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) to The Open Group Test Suite License and it looks like the license would be considered non-free. ( Here is why )

A welcome shift, from the we’ll release when it is ready philosophy. Frequent and predictable stable releases will do a world of good to the Debian project.

If you happen to be using alsa, and sound stopped working suddenly after an upgrade (even though you have added yourself to the audio group), it could be because the Headphone Jack Sense and Line Jack Sense are set to [on] in the mixer settings. They need to be turned off. The [on] should be [off] in these two amixer output sections:

Only one potential 2006 Debian Project Leader candidate got the goals right. It is unfortunate that Lars Wirzenius had to denominate himself (and in my opinion, the reasons he cites for denominating himself are precisely the ones that would keep potential Debian maintainers from contributing to the project). Meld is this awesome diff and merge tool that earns plenty of coolness points for all the amazing features that it provides [three way merges, directory diffs, tabs for multiple simultaneous diffs, syntax highlighting, user defined editor, cvs/svn plugins, all those pretty curves in the diffs ;) etc.]. This is one among the very important reasons why I like free software.

I use IMAPFilter to filter my email on a remote IMAP server. Turns out the recent glibc versions detect double frees and memory corruptions, and IMAPFilter was crashing with a "*** glibc detected *** corrupted double-linked list: 0xc001babe ***" error, rendering it useless. ( Read more... )
