A welcome shift, from the we’ll release when it is ready philosophy. Frequent and predictable stable releases will do a world of good to the Debian project.
No it is never late. There are problems that Debian solves (very well) that Ubuntu does not (and will not) solve. Ubuntu is mostly a polished Debian testing + unstable that has been tested for a while.
But I _think_ the "Ubuntu / Debian" thing may become the "Mandrake / RedHat" pair. Only time will tell.
