AN;; I don’t know why the summary for this is so weird. I’m drawing a blank. Anyway, this is the sequel to Cracks, so head on over to my journal and read it if you haven’t already. It’s not required that you do, it’s just recommended. Also, I’m not sure how it went from a mafia!Jongyu to some strange secret agent, Sci Fi type thing... Umm... Yeah.

Jonghyun sat on a chair in the kitchen in a small two room apartment. The weather outside was dull and grey, the kind that hinted at rain that might or might not come. The temperature dropped almost drastically for the coming of autumn.
He took a sip of his coffee as he felt someone wrap his arms around his shoulder, burying his face in the crook of his neck. “Hey Jjong,” he said softly. Jonghyun smiled and turned to plant a kiss on the side of his head. “Hey Jinki. Why up so early?” Jinki absentmindedly traced the scar left by a bullet removed from Jonghyun’s shoulder.
“It was cold in bed without you.” Jonghyun chuckled and pulled the other boy’s arms from his shoulder, scooting his chair out and pulling him onto his lap. He saw Jinki staring at the scar on his arm as Jonghyun wrapped his arms around his waist.
“Three years ago, I thought you were going to die from those. You lost a lot of blood...” Jinki twisted around in his lap to take a peek at the one on his leg, but Jonghyun was wearing long sweatpants. “It’ll take more than a few bullets to kill me. But it was nice, waking up and knowing I wasn’t in heaven because you face was hovering over mine. There’s no way you’d be dead.”
“Not that you’d go to heaven in the first place.” Jonghyun grinned and buried his face in the other boy’s chest, inhaling his scent. “You’re right... so I was glad to see your face anyway.” Jinki brought up a hand to stroke his hair. “Do we have to keep doing this Jjong? All of this running?”
Jonghyun sighed. This again. Around twice a month, Jinki would get tired of moving around all over the place all the time. He would get tired of the secrecy, the false names, the false identities. Jonghyun’s father was doing all he could to help, only because he knew that Jinki was special in some way. No one searched that hard for someone unless there was something... Something they needed.
And that’s all Jonghyun knew. He knew he had to keep Jinki safe. He didn’t know who he was, why these men that looked nothing short of secret agents were coming after them. He sighed as Jinki threw his arms over his shoulders and laid his head on Jonghyun’s. “C’mon Jinki. We’ve got to get ready for work.”
Jinki didn’t move for a few seconds. Jonghyun knew he was frowning, but he wouldn’t argue.
--
The two worked as stock boys for the local supermarket. It was a way for Jinki to get out and socialize so he didn’t go crazy, but it definitely wouldn’t draw much attention to them. It was somewhere Jonghyun could keep an eye on him.
He kept in regular contact with Key, who was still trying to dig through anything and everything to find out as much information about Jinki as he could. “I don’t know Jonghyun. And you know I don’t like saying stuff like that. This boy just materialized into the world. There’s no birth records, social security, nothing! Not even shot records! He just exists.”
Jonghyun nodded at a coworker that walked by and pulled his visor lower over his face. “Seriously? What the hell... Wait.” He turned and looked back at the guy that just passed by him in the uniform. “That guy doesn’t work here. Key. I gotta go.” He hung up before the other boy could protest and went running into the front store.
He looked around wildly for Jinki, pretending to do his job while he was at it. He ran down the middle of the aisles, looking back and forth wildly for him. He eventually found him stacking meat, helping out a woman pick out the best cut.
The pseudo-employee was headed for him in a straight bee-line. Then others caught his eye. Oh god. They found them. “Jinki! JINKI! GET DOWN!” Jinki’s head turned towards Jonghyun confused for a moment before ducking down behind the cart as shots rang out.
The whole supermarket seemed to erupt in screams all at once, and people were running around like ants. Couldn’t they have picked a better day to do this than the day all the middle aged women went grocery shopping? Jonghyun shoved his way through the crowd and walked up behind one of the pseudo-employees, snapping his neck silently and lowering his body to the ground.
He raised an eyebrow as he examined his face. Who wears sunglasses inside? They didn’t look like ordinary sunglasses though, so Jonghyun stuffed this into his pocket before hurrying up to Jinki. He saw all the pseudo-employees shoving their way through the people towards them.
“C’mon.” Jonghyun grabbed his hand and took a deep breath before getting up and running, dragging Jinki behind him. Gunfire ripped behind them, destroying shelves and sending other things flying. He was going to be damned before he got shot again.
He ducked down and slid underneath a chained off aisle, hauling Jinki up after and making a break for the door. Suddenly, Jinki tripped and fell, pulling down Jonghyun with him. Jonghyun swore and stood up, pulling Jinki to his feet again as he heard three guns cock.
He pressed Jinki against the back wall and shielded him with his body as he looked up to see three men, all in black suits and sunglasses with guns pointed at his chest. Jonghyun pursed his lips, heart racing.
“Jjong...” Jinki whispered behind him, clearly scared. “Do not harm the Subject. Kill the other boy.” The Subject? What the hell? Then suddenly, it clicked. “Jinki... Don’t hate me for this.” Jonghyun grabbed Jinki and shoved him into the middle man, who was clearly confused and unprepared as he went down underneath Jinki. Jonghyun dived out of the way as shots were fired at him. He kicked at the back of the man’s knees, and knocking him out before grabbing his gun and firing at the other man.
“JONGHYUN!” He saw the third man dragging Jinki away and aimed, closing one eye before firing as he ran towards them. His precision was deadly as the bullet entered the man’s temple. He dropped to the ground like a sack of bricks.
Jonghyun grabbed Jinki’s arm, turning to fire a few more shots before they ran through the doors. He grabbed at his uniform and pulled off whatever he could with one hand, Jinki doing the same. For once in Jinki’s life, he was glad that Jonghyun convinced him to let him get the motorcycle.
Jonghyun threw the helmet at Jinki and started it in one go, Jinki hurrying on and barely having time to wrap his arms around Jonghyun’s waist before he took off. In his rear view mirrors, he could still see them spilling out and swerved as he turned the corner to avoid a few more gun shots.
He rode around the town three times, weaving in and out of every road he could see before stopping at a deserted gas station and calling Key. “Key. Surveillance on our apartment. Is it safe to go back?”
“No. They’ve got the place surrounded. Looks like you guys will just have to stay at a hotel. Do you have cash on you?”
“No.”
“I’ll make a reservation in the next town over then. Head a little ways towards the north. You should see an inn called ‘Red Roof Inn’. If you can’t tell which one it is, then you’re retarded. Reservation is for a Mr. Shin Jonghyun.” Jonghyun nodded, watching Jinki kick at dirt with his head lowered.
“Your father and I will set up new identities for you and Jinki as soon as possible. He’ll probably make you go to school.” Jonghyun groaned. School. Great. Like he needed the stress of homework and exams added to being shot at all the time.
“It’ll be good for Jinki I guess... he’s the brilliant one after all.” The boy in question looked up when he heard his name being said. Jonghyun grinned and winced slightly when he felt his face stung. He reached up and dabbed at it, seeing blood on his fingers. He shook his head and crossed his arm back over his chest.
“Yeah. The rest of us will be coming too. Minho will pick you up at the inn tomorrow while Taemin and I head down to the house and set things up. That means you’ll have to dump the motorcycle.” Jonghyun groaned again and pretended to throw a fit, which earned a slight smile from Jinki.
“Seriously? This thing makes me look so cool! Man. This sucks.”
“Quit whining. At least you’re alive. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Then the line went dead. Jonghyun hung up his phone and wandered over to Jinki with a grin on his face. “There’s a room for us at an inn a little ways north. We’ll have to walk but...”
Jinki wouldn’t meet Jonghyun’s gaze again. “Jinki. It’s not your fault. Don’t blame yourself.” Jonghyun wrapped his arms around Jinki and brushed away a few stray strands of hair from his face. “You know why we have to keep running, Jinki. If we could stay in one place for longer, we would. I know this is hard on you.” He could see Jinki’s eyes get teary.
“I know but... I don’t even know why these people are after me. I don’t see why you put so much time and effort, and even your life on the line to protect me.” Jonghyun smiled and wiped away his tears with his thumb. “Stupid. It’s because I love you. Now if you love me, you’ll grab my hand so we can start walking to the inn. I’m dead tired. Escaping certain death takes a lot out of you.”
--
The both of them collapsed onto the bed in a heap. “I’m going to kill Key... a little ways my ass.” It took almost an hour to get there on foot. When they arrived at the room, there was a fresh change of clothes on the bed, and a small billfold with a few hundred dollars in it on the drawer.
“You wanna shower first? Or me?” Jinki blinked a few times before a mischievous grin pulled itself on his face. “How about together?” He asked before pulling Jonghyun up by his arm and dragging him to the bathroom.
“Jinki. Seriously? I’m too tired for this.”
--
After their shower, both of them got dressed and fell back into the bed again, Jonghyun pulling Jinki into his arms as Jinki nuzzled into his chest again. “We can’t get anything at the apartment back?” Jonghyun said no, which left Jinki a little bit sad. “The presents you got me are still there. And my favorite t-shirt.” Jonghyun ruffled Jinki’s hair. “There will be more presents and more favorite t-shirts.”
“And our picture... from our first date.” Jonghyun laughed and closed his eyes. “I keep three copies of that picture in my wallet.” Jinki’s eyes brightened. “Really?”
“Of course. Reminds me why I’m dodging bullets and risking my life. It’s totally worth it by the way.” Jinki laughed as he held him closer. Both of them closed there eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
--
A black unmarked car pulled up to the front of the inn as Jinki and Jonghyun stepped outside the following morning. Jonghyun instinctively stood in front of Jinki, wary of who was in the driver’s seat. His body relaxed slightly when the window rolled down, and he saw Minho’s amused face.
Jonghyun grinned before opening the passenger door for Jinki and shutting it for him when he sat down. Jonghyun got into the backseat and shut his door before the car rolled off.
“I heard it was nasty business to clean up the supermarket.” Minho chuckled from the driver’s seat. “You should’ve heard the things Key was saying when he found out. I think there was something like, ‘if Jonghyun doesn’t get killed by those goons, I’M going to kill him!’ “ They all laughed at his impression of Key.
They made small talk as Minho drove. The place was pretty far away. If Minho went the speed limit, it probably would’ve taken five hours to get there. But he didn’t, so at most it would take two.
“I’m glad you’re both okay though. We haven’t had any luck finding out too much about the Syndicate. We just know they’re dangerous people, and that they want Jinki back. Bad.”
“OH REALLY?” Jonghyun said as sarcastically as he could from the backseat. He dabbed at the bandage on his face as the cut started to sting again.
“Why don’t you tell me something I don’t know?” Minho told Jinki to open the glove compartment, and he did as he was told. There were two brown files inside, one with Jinki’s name on it, and one with Jonghyun’s name on it.
Jinki passed Jonghyun’s back to him in the backseat and opened his to look at. “So my name is Lee Onew now? Ugh...” Jinki’s eyes scanned the papers, and he was done reading things in a matter of seconds. Minho raised an eyebrow at him but didn’t say anything.
“Good grief. I’m glad you guys let me keep my name, but now I have to memorize a different birthday and shit? Really?” There were official documents with their new names on them, including social security cards and driver’s licenses, and student IDs for the local university.
Jonghyun held his student ID and sighed. “Of all the things... School.” He dug around his papers until he found his schedule. “... OH COME ON. Calculus? What the hell am I going to use that for?!” Jonghyun threw his head back on the seat and wanted to die on the spot.
“It’s okay Jonghyun. I can help you with classes and stuff. I’m finally useful for something!” Jinki said from the front seat. Jonghyun had to hide the grin on his face as he mumbled something out loud and laughed.
Minho made a gagging noise from the front seat. “Did my ears deceive me, or did you just say ‘useful for something besides being cute and sex’? I think I need mental counseling now...” Jonghyun laughed as Jinki flushed bright red.
They finally pulled up into the driveway of a normal sized house in the suburbs. Key and Taemin were leaning on the doorframe as everyone got out of the car. A smirk curled onto Key’s face as Jonghyun came into view. “Long time no see best friend.”

Subject seems to be overworked. Memory database closed. So there were more people involved in keeping the Subject away from the Syndicate. Test results are back. Everything seems to be positive. Will perform field test tomorrow before attempting to clear the memory base again.
