The looks thing is so tedious. And it gets into everything, particularly for women. A huge chunk of appearance is, as you said, genetic, and investing a lot of time and energy into looking as attractive as they're genetically capable of isn't always the best use of a person's time. If a woman can either dump a lot of effort into, for example, research science, and be ugly, or dump the same time and energy into her looks and be merely homely, why is she obligated to chose the second one?

Annoyingly, society seems to be moving towards the wrong kind of gender equality - less "You know what? A woman isn't obliged to be decorative, and unless it's her specific goal, there's no point judging her on it", and more "Men should be perfectly decorative at all times, too!"

It's also a pointless metric because frankly everyone's attractive/beautiful/pretty to someone. Saying "this person doesn't meet the social standards of accepted beauty" is even more pointless that "I don't find this person attractive".

EXACTLY GOD. People moan constantly that men don't put in as much effort into grooming as women and instead of saying "right, I do not need to pluck my eyebrows every single day" they go "MEN SHOULD DO SEVEN HUNDRED PUSHUPS AND MOISTURISE THEIR BALLS".

Yeah, there are a lot of people considered ugly who have me going "I think she looks quite nice!", and outside of a very limited set of circumstances, neither my opinion nor the general social standard should matter.

Because the world would be so much better if everyone suffered the narrowed focus and limited energy caused by endless "Am I pretty enough?" worries. (I really, really, really want a world where making yourself conventionally attractive is treated as just another hobby, like knitting or learning the theremin. People who are into it can step in and do something impressive, and everyone will be all "Ooh, that's cool!", but there's no pressure to jump in and learn it.)

I'm broadly in favour of "making yourself look a certain way" being a hobby, especially if it can be widened to include more people's different ideas of tittification.

I know, I thought that was insanely unreasonable. SHE'S NOT THERE TO BE PRETTY, SHE'S THERE TO BE GOOD AT SPORT.
