The book I am in the research and development (with optional swearing) stages of is about four people who destroy each other’s lives because of moments of bad judgement and inability to reconcile desire with acceptability; it’s also about classism, sexism, racism, colonialism, and homophobia; it is about the way that one can, in attempting to avoid

the problem is i get so into the negative characteristics of the protagonists that when i was describing them to jess she was like "ugh" and i wasn't really able to defend them...

Those are all interesting things for a book to be about!

That's the big sell summary, I think the small sell summary or the anti-sell is "four white dudes from England demonstrate how shitty white English dudes can be and you're still meant to feel sorry for them".

Yeah, that's not the most marketable description. Possibly lie and claim it's a love story between a teenage white girl with brown hair and a vampire billionaire in a dystopian future?

The girl has telekinesis and can fire arrows and the dude is unreachable and changeable but he eats her tears so it's okay. Also he broods a lot.

It also has an absolutely phenomenal bodycount, because I love killing characters.

knowing that I will kill them later on gives me the impetus to make secondary characters more sympathetic and appealing, so as to extract the maximum of unhappiness from readers when they die.

That's the mark of a worthwhile project right there.
