In my headcanon Withnail is Sherlock's uncle on his Mother's side. In fact his Mother's favorite brother. Mummy and Sherdian were almost incestuously close. Then she hit puberty discovered other boys, he grew jealous and hateful. He discovered booze and embarrassed her. So they stopped being close. But after a Withnail's failed suicide attempt in 1970, she, Monty and Marwood 'rescued' him. Mostly her doing the whole Florence Nightengale thing. And got him a proper agent and good roles. Yes he gets a happy ending, accepts his queerness and get Marwood. Still an asrehole.
Oh and Sherlock's Daddy HATES HIM.

Sherlock was almost named Sheridan after his uncle, dodged a bullet there.
