The one I'm using at the moment because my subscription to McAfee ran out is AVG.

There's a free version you can get, as in completely free, not just a 30 day trial free, that seems to work quite well. It's obviously more minimal that the complete one, but as long as you're not doing masses of online banking you should be fine.

Ah, wicked, I've had AVG before. I don't tend to bank online at aaaaall, just ... buy things? I hope that won't lead to doom.

Seconding AVG!
That's what both my dad and I use.
only problem I've had has been a run-in with Mal-Ware probably because I like 4chan a whole bunch and have a re-direct virus that I haven't figured out how to get rid of yet. >> Mal-ware fixed with Malwarebytes' Anti-malware free version. but that miiiight take up slightly too much space. dunno.

Thirding that shiz, it's what I use and so far it's been pretty ace (and you know I download torrents, which is probably my main worry for accidentally virusing my computer, but it's been all good).

If you've got Windows 7, you can just use Windows Defender. Otherwise AVG is the best bet. You might want to sweep up the non-traditional / web viruses with Malwarebytes or Ad-Aware every now and again too.

Was going to say this about Windows 7. It's what we use as it doesn't do the resource-hogging and is a reasonable though not absolutely top-end AV. McAfee sucks.

We don't do much that puts us at risk of viruses, though. (And have all browser plugins switched off or load on demand only).

I think AVG's not as good as it used to be? Have heard Avast mentioned.
