And by "like me" I mean white middle class Londoners & ex-Londoners who are currently doing my fucking head in on Facebook for the following reasons

I can't wait to find out that some of these people had the same "Wait, cops are NOT my friends?" reaction and meltdown that I had the first time I ran afoul of a cop, in a relatively-painless incident. I mean, painless in the sense that I wasn't, say, beaten or shot, but in terms of time and emotion and money, FUCK IT WAS NOT PAINLESS.
And now I loathe pretty much all cops ever, except the one cop who talks records with me at the SW Precinct, because stopping looking at them as my "friends" made me realise that there's a giant personality clash between me and people attracted to policework.
Oh, and also, a lot of them are trigger-happy (not merely in the shooting sense) asshats who operate under total siege mentality.
Yeah, these guys are trotting out the "bad apples" line and ... no. I am related to cops. It is not "bad apples". It is an institutional build up of disgustingness and pus and it attracts people who like to abuse power and the people who DO want to do good within the organisation are frequently shut up, fobbed off, or smashed down.
Oh, and also, a lot of them are trigger-happy (not merely in the shooting sense) asshats who operate under total siege mentality.
I'm a harmless-looking middle-class white woman who's mostly lived in comfortable middle-to-upper-class neighborhoods, and for me, "Cops are your friends" would be a dangerous oversimplification of the situation (they're there to help people like me more often than not, but even in my case, it's good to be aware that they're not automatically on my side). And I'm certainly not stupid enough to imagine everyone everywhere has my level of privilege.
[ref. they are people I met when I was taking coke much more frequently and they don't appear to have done anything in the last decade apart from become even more certain of their own brilliance. I cannot adequately convey with mere human words how much I loathe it.]
I'm very aware of my privilege and so am trying my best to stay out of it. I just wish that the looting, violence and general iniquity hadn't happened tbh as that's really detracted from what was, I think, a legitimate grudge on the part of the people of that area.
Trust me, your contributions to the debate have been significantly more level-headed and less fucking patronising than the shit spewing out of Foz's keyboard. Hate. Hate.
They view distrust of the institution as a sign of rebellion and immaturity because they benefit from its implementation. It's less stupidity and more willful self-interest.
