I don't know, I think there are certain FEELINGS which just come part and parcel of being a member of the species (you know, providing you're not emotionally dead or whatever) which, regardless of the source, people can empathise with. A woman with a dead son in Mozambique may deal with it differently to a woman with a dead son in South Korea, but in the end they're both women with dead sons and they're both having a powerful emotional response to it of some nature.

Or, if you prefer, "being betrayed by someone you trusted" is another near-universal experience.
