It's not even about the racebending thing.

Saw the new "Trek" promo, which seems to be teasing Cumberbatch as Khan after all, and found myself really hoping that it is a misdirect. And not just because of the whole issue of white actors taking minority parts, but because the whole reason "Wrath of Khan" is an epic narrative is that it's a battle between two old enemies, Kirk and Khan, with ( Read more... )

Entirely agree. digitalemur and karakara98 got to listen to me rant about this very thing on a hike back in the summer.

Somebody I know on Facebook suggested the villain of the piece was Gary Mitchell. Oh, I hope, I hope... not the least of which because dude, what a potentially awesome story...

I have also heard of this alternative possibility and share your hope - great minds, etc. ;-)

I've read people who feel that the inclusion of the blond woman with the bob haircut is a clear call-out to Elizabeth Dehner, which, having seen their pics, there definitely is a resemblance. Could be a red herring, though.

*quickly reads up on who the heck those people are*

Ooooooh! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. Might also be a red herring but I think it would work SO much better than Khan!

Also, if you're going to give a voiceover in the teaser that sounds that particular type of sinister, this would be a great story line for you to be telling.

I think you're right, but the other thing that made the movie was Kirk's apoplectic readings of mundane, hackneyed and even tautological lines.

"Kirk... you're still alive... my old friend."
"Still... old... friend!! You've done-everything-in-your-power-to-kill-me-Khan, but like a poor marksman, you keep MISSING the TARGET!

I think it looks terrible, frankly (though I hated the Reboot, to be fair.) In particular, Star Trek is, y'know, about spaceships and meaningful ethical choices and teamwork. And there was little to no space whatsoever in that teaser, let alone meaningful ethical choices, which I wasn't even really hoping for. I give Earth about a 50% chance of surviving the movie....

Also, practically no Spock or Uhura. Boo.

Also, Khan is all about generations and passing the torch (or not passing, as the case may be); as you say, it totally doesn't work with new-Captain. What the heck does anyone have to seek vengeance against Kirk for?

See, I rather liked the reboot... *sigh*. Extra need for expectation management.

My sense is that you did not grow up as a diehard Trekker, though?

For me, Trek has always been about IDIC, and the Reboot kinda stomped on that in ways that really upset me.

I have nothing of substance to contribute, but I want to cheer you all on in this discussion. I miss deconstructing pop culture with you all on a more regular basis.
