It's not even about the racebending thing.

Saw the new "Trek" promo, which seems to be teasing Cumberbatch as Khan after all, and found myself really hoping that it is a misdirect. And not just because of the whole issue of white actors taking minority parts, but because the whole reason "Wrath of Khan" is an epic narrative is that it's a battle between two old enemies, Kirk and Khan, with ( Read more... )

I haven't even seen the trailer and I'm all "I really hope he's not Khan, I really hope he's not Khan."

Not reading comments, because I just haven't watched it yet. :)

I quite liked the reboot, and I find myself ambivalent on the whole Khan thing. Perhaps it's because I wasn't really blown away by Wrath of Khan when I watched it, I don't think I have very much invested in it being Khan or not.

I've heard that Gary Mitchell is the villain in the currently running comic book series, so it'd be odd for him to be the villain in the movie, though I suppose you never know.

OMG if Benedict Cumberbatch was going to be Harry Mudd I would watch that in a heartbeat.

Don't think we're every going to see Harry Mudd in the reboot universe though. Not gritty and post-9/11 enough.

Y'know, I gotta say I didn't think Star Trek was all that dark and gritty. Yes, obviously they did blow up Vulcan, but it was also filled with hilarious bits, like the entire sequence of Bones sneaking Kirk onto the Enterprise. Or the Sulu collapsible sword bit. Even though they gave Kirk a potentially emo inducing background, Kirk is not a sit in the corner "my father is dead!" Guy but rather a fun loving, young Han Solo style hotshot.

In a lot of ways I thought the first movie was very hopeful and optimistic--in the face of tragedy, sure, but compared to, say The Dark Knight, or rven Cadino Royale, it was fairly low (bright?) on the darkness scale.
