Hot and Busy

Jul 21, 2020 23:47

Ugh, it's been disgustingly hazy hot and humid lately, with no end in sight. I mean, I've had worse, but that doesn't make it fun. Thank God for central air conditioning.

Spent another four hours weeding and picking things out of my veggie garden on Sunday morning; I had to get up at 6a in order to get it done before it got too meltingly hot. ( Read more... )

It's been a LONG time since I lived in a dorm - online shopping was not a thing back then LOL - but I have to believe that in this day and age, the dorms have some reasonable setup to handle students buying stuff online and having packages delivered?

Can you maybe buy some of the bulkier stuff online, and have it delivered to her dorm address? Maybe she doesn't have her dorm fridge on day one - but it will give her stuff to do in that time between arriving and classes starting, if she is getting deliveries and unpacking stuff and still having things to set up?

Alas, we already have the dorm fridge here - Target had a really good sale last week. Otherwise - yeah, that would have been ideal. (Dorms will start accepting deliveries on Aug 1.) I'm not sure what else we need to buy that's bulky, except maybe a comforter. Mattress topper is already here (from her twin bed that she had in PA - this school doesn't do Twin XL like most school, probably because it's a women's college and there are fewer super-tall people). Clothes are here. She'd like a floor rug, but I don't see buying that online ( ... )

Ah, yeah, I guess if you already have everything, your only option is to ship it yourselves if you can't fit it into the car ( ... )

I think hot pots aren't allowed but electric teakettles might be? (It's actually on our list of things to ask.) But there's a kitchenette in the dorm, and MiniPlu's room happens to be pretty close to it, so she can heat up her soup in there. We're sending her off with a plate, a bowl, a mug, a spoon and a fork, just for that sort of thing.

I remember Barack Obama admitted to bawling after taking his elder daughter to Harvard. I'm not a huge crier, but my husband is, and I think it will be very weird to have MiniPlu gone for three months. (And then possibly weirder to have her back again!)

MiniPlu's bf? Did I miss something?

Glad to hear Gem is doing fine. Hope she didn't catch anything. Quarantined ... poor thing. It's such a 2020 thing. *rofl*

https://aome.livejournal.com/1315952.html It's a locked post but you should be able to see it. They've finally been able to meet face to face a few times in the past 6 weeks, although almost entirely in group settings. They still talk on the phone every night, and he seems very sweet. I had locked the post originally because it was still pretty new and he was still a "secret" from everyone in the house except Will and me, but when MiniPlu came home one evening with half a dozen red roses last month, she had to confess. ;-)

And lol - yeah, even the cat has to be quarantined in 2020! :P (We've jokingly wished that we could just put a face mask on her and let her out.)

We definitely don't plan on a trailer/U-Haul - the roof rack is a good idea but only the Subaru has one. Will and I will both go with her, as far as I know, but not Two. (Not sure he'd be allowed anyway - I think only parents are.) I don't think either one of us wants to drive back all that way alone, and we'd both like to be there to say goodbye.

I have a feeling that 2-hour window will be enforced because of COVID, but we'll see. And because of that window, we don't plan on doing any local shopping. If we have to unload and then leave pronto, there wouldn't be time to shop and bring stuff back, you know? Better to have it all with us already. Move-in times will range from 8a to 5p and I'm dearly hoping it's somewhere in the noon-4p (assuming the final window starts at 5p, not ends at 5p) window because otherwise we'll have to be up before dawn (4 hour drive) or be back super-late, you know?

Good to know what you were able to fit in. And thanks for the tips!
