Dear old Dad. And Mom. And some books.

Oct 16, 2019 20:37

So, last week I went to visit my Dad in Oregon from Wed-Sat, and my mom for a bare 15-hour overnight visit, half of which was spent sleeping.

Short version: My parents are both well and content, so that's good.

Long version: ( My dad's house: Of mail, TV and slippers )

dad, books, travel

big hugs to you! None of this is easy and I think you are doing a fabulous job at walking the line between trying to help and acknowledging that your dad is, well, your dad :) Some things won't change - I totally recognize the 'wear things till they are falling apart, whilst having brand new replacements in the drawers" - my dad was the SAME damn way :D

I bought him some new slippers from WalMart yesterday. I realize it's probably a pointless venture, but I have to TRY.

Of course you do - I would have done the same thing!

Guess it's not easy being so far away from your dad and not being able to help on a day to day basis.

Yeah, I wish I could check in with him every couple of days.

It must be heartbreaking to find your father unable to cope. Does he know what things he owns? Or, does he sort of accept that he has "stuff?" If it's the latter, maybe you could throw most of the worn out clothing away, replacing it with new. You might have to take over all of his finances. I had to put my mother on a debit card with a low limit. It was not pleasant for either of us, but it did help her with her finances. I put all of her bills that were applicable on autopay. Even then, I had to log into her bank account weekly, if not daily at times, to keep track of the balances.

Having been there and done that, you have my sympathy.

To throw out his worn-out clothing, I'd have to first get him OUT of it ( ... )
