Cats learn to associate weird noises with food pretty fast. I think I fucked up my cat Aiko for life, when I had some whipped cream when she was a kitten, and shared with her. The hissing noise scared the crap out of her, but she thought the whipped cream was THE FOOD OF THE GODS. Soon she'd figured out that the scary noise meant delicious ambrosia, and would come running whenever she heard it. To this day, it makes her all excited.
I also got four cats to accept an automated litter box, but that was ages ago and it was kind of crap and broke.
Ha. In the same thread where I was recommended the feeder I eventually ordered, this guy was singing the praises of this super-duper neato automatic litter box that's been working flawlessly for like a thousand years and does his taxes and shit, and when I clicked on their website and couldn't even find the price, I was like, "Wow, this is going to be absurdly HOLY SHITSACK THREE HUNDRED FORTY NOOOO THANKS"
That must be the Litter Robot. Everyone talks about how those are great. I know someone online who has one, and he says it works, but is very, very loud

Our first drinky fountain thing - acquired when Mayu wouldn't stop yanking the light plastic dishes across the floor for fun, slopping water everywhere and reducing Kaien to licking the floor for hydration D: - was pretty good, if a little hot-plugged and noisy. And hard to clean. The second one sucked so much that we now just use the base.
This is what we're using. (Told you it was ludicrously expensive. We could only get it thanks to my brother paying us for help with his vending routes.) I would recommend it, with the caveat of watching out for one cat being much more aggressive or timid than the other--Mayu is still too scared to come get her share, so Maka is eating it all.
Our cats started losing a lot of weight when we changed their food to something grain-free. We're actually got them on a mix of raw meat and grain-free canned right now, and my ten-year-old cat looks and acts like she's five. They've all lost weight (and they all needed to) they're more alert, and more active, their coats are silkier, their eyes are brighter, it's kind of amazing. But they did start losing weight even when I just switched them to a grain-free kibble, so if you're attached to the kibble, that might work for you

My sister once debated getting our dogs an automatic feeder. Then she remembered brown-butt dog weighs 130 pounds, but is completely terrified of FLIES, STOVES AND EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD. So the idea was, sadly, trashed.

One of mine is getting rather...obese, so I need to start getting a feeder. What kind did you get? Do you recommend it?

Though I'm one to talk. I did buy the $300 Litter Robot. Totally worth it, though.
