She glances at Alejandro, frowning thoughtfully. "You have to take us to the circus," she says finally. "That way we know you're not lying."

The intention was to bring home one child, not two, he’s sure, but the two children are attached, and he does not wish to separate them.

Tenderness so warm that it hurts grows in his chest. He puts an arm around Alejandro’s shoulder and pulls him close, murmuring against his temple, “These children…I want them to stay. I want them to be ours.”

“His name is Felix,” he tells the children, crouching down next to them,”If you like, you can pet him. Do you want to, Mathièu?”
In reply, the boy tottles over to Felix without a moment’s hesitation and reaches up his arms. Felix is only happy to let him wrap his small arms around his beak and pet his ears, purring happily with his eyes closed.
